It’s now been well over four years since the last season of Mindhunter ended, but fans refuse to give up hope for more.

And in a glimmer, like a real slim glimmer, of hope, there has been a slight update for a third season of the Netflix crime-thriller.

Season two dropped in the UK back in August 2019 but in February last year, it was confirmed Mindhunter would not be returning.

Created by Joe Penhall with direction from David Fincher the synopsis reads: “In the late 1970s, two FBI agents broaden the realm of criminal science by investigating the psychology behind murder and end up getting too close to real-life monsters.”

After tens of thousands of fans signed a petition for the ‘production and completion’ of a third season of Mindhunter, one of the cast has now teased that could be possible.

Fincher previously said the show hadn’t ‘attracted a large enough audience’ to justify a return.

However, Holt McCallany, who played FBI Agent Bill Tench, claims the director is considering an attempt to bring it back.

Talking with Awards Daily, the actor said: “I’ve heard that David’s thought about it. I’m not saying it’s going to come back, but what I am saying is that if it comes back, I’m coming back with it. You can take that to the bank, but it’ll depend on what David wants to do.”

McCallany did acknowledge though that a third season is ‘probably unlikely’ as it has ‘been a few years now’ but still added: “But just even that he would think about it is a hopeful sign.”

Before last year’s announcement that Mindhunter wouldn’t return, Netflix announced in January 2020 that the third season was on indefinite hold while Fincher pursed other projects but may ‘revisit [the series] in the future’.

So, it seems we keep flipping between ‘it’s definitely not happening’ and ‘it could maybe happen’.

Fincher said of Netflix’s decision to discontinue the thriller in February 2023: “I’m very proud of the first two seasons.

“But it’s a particularly expensive show and, in the eyes of Netflix, we haven’t attracted a large enough audience to justify such and investment.

“I don’t blame them; they took risks to launch the series.”

He added: “It’s a blessing to be able to work with people who are capable of boldness. The day our desires are not the same, we have to be honest about parting ways.”

I guess for now, fans just have to keep their fingers crossed. Hold on to the hope lads.
