God of War: Ragnarok closed the book on the Norse saga back in 2022, with Atreus venturing off to find the giants, while Kratos and Freya stayed behind to guard their new home. But the story as a whole isn’t over yet, as reports suggest that Santa Monica is already working on a sequel.
That begs the question: where is God of War headed next? The most popular pick by far is Egypt, which was nearly the backdrop in the 2018 soft reboot, before the team decided that the setting would be too busy for a game centred around Kratos. However, that doesn’t mean it can’t be used in a future game, as Ragnarok director Cory Barlog said that the sequel could explore the Egyptian or even Mayan pantheons.
Thanks to leakers, we do have some evidence to suggest that Santa Monica is leaning towards Egypt, but speaking at MCM London Comic Con (via GamesRadar+), Christopher Judge let slip that the team may not have decided yet. But he did voice his hopes that Kratos would get to explore the sandy deserts of Egypt one day soon.
“Because I became best known as Teal’c from Stargate, to go to Egypt would be a completion of my circle,” Judge said. “But whatever is decided – wait… if there is another game, I have no doubt that no matter what pantheon it is, it will be great.”
God Of War Has Been Teasing Egypt Since The Start

There have been plenty of clues to Egypt sprinkled throughout the series, dating all the way back to the original game. The official novelisation reveals that, during Kratos’ first outing, Ares was “spreading terror and destruction” in Egypt. It also describes the Blade of Artemis as a “broadly curved blade […] more like the khopesh favoured by the heathen Egyptians”.
Bridging the gap between the original games and the 2018 reboot, the Fallen God comic sees Kratos venturing through Egypt on his way to Midgard, even meeting the god Thoth. Later on, in Ragnarok, he finds an Ankh in the ruins of the Oarsmen, which Mimir says is of the “River Empire”, alluding once again to these faraway lands. In the accompanying codex, it claims that the Egyptian gods are “both ancient AND technologically advanced,” who “rule with wisdom and humility.”
Series creator David Jaffe also revealed that, in his original plan for God of War 3, the Sphinx would have been a monster frozen with Medusa’s head by Kratos. Oh, and it would’ve ended with the birth of Christ.
With such a rich history already laid out, tied directly to the Ghost of Sparta, no less, as he hails from the same pantheon that laid siege to their lands, there’s plenty for Santa Monica to tap into for a future story set in Egypt. And if leaks are to be believed, then that might be exactly what they’re planning.

According to Insider Gaming editor-in-chief Tom Henderson, Kratos will be equipped with “an Egyptian sword” in the next mainline game, possibly confirming that we’re headed to Egypt as many had hoped.
