Could Manhunt get a second life? Discover how Red Dead Redemption 2’s eerie elements show Rockstar’s horror potential.

Rockstar Games is now associated with groundbreaking open-world experiences, from the streets of Grand Theft Auto to the beautiful wilderness of Red Dead Redemption 2. However, lurking in the shadows of their successes is one game that needs a bit more love from fans: Manhunt.

Released in 2003, it was a violent game that pushed boundaries with its disturbing graphic content. While it didn’t leave a lasting impact, it certainly became an attraction for criticism. Looking back now, there’s a feeling that maybe it was judged too harshly, and it’s time for the studio to give it another shot.

It’s not even a question that Red Dead Redemption 2 proved that Rockstar has the creative capability to craft a deeply woven world that has complex characters and an immersive atmosphere, which can sometimes lead to a terrifying experience.
The game isn’t strictly a horror title, but certain moments, from encounters with certain figures to the unsettling tension certain scenario creates, show that the studio can invoke a sense of fear if it wants to. It effectively shows the studio’s ability to build suspense, and sometimes downright fear.
This raises an interesting question: Could the studio revisit Manhunt? Could a less edgy, more refined version of the game thrive today? It certainly needs a bit more restraint on the edginess and a lot of attention to detail but still, embracing the horror and violent elements.
Let’s be honest: the game had its flaws, repetitive gameplay, dated graphics, and a flat story, but it also showed a darker side of Rockstar that hasn’t been fully explored since, to a full extent at least. (There was a sequel in 2007 but it didn’t continue the story and was also an ok-ish game, at best)
And yet, aside from all the controversy, it was something unique. The tension it created with its stealth mechanics and just the eerie feeling of being hunted set it apart from other games at the time. Even today, very few games utilize certain aspects like that.
Why does Manhunt deserve another shot?

The Manhunt franchise has been in the shadows since 2007 and it feels like the studio has moved on from the franchise as well. However, there is just that feeling that if the title was given a second chance in today’s market, it could potentially thrive.
Even back in 2003, it was a significant step in Rockstar’s evolution as a developer. With this title, the developer showed that it could explore more mature themes. It was the start and the studio showed its prowess later with Red Dead Redemption 2 and Max Payne 3.
Just imagine Manhunt with today’s technology and the studio’s renowned focus on storytelling. From any way you look at it, a modern version of the game has the potential to be a success with its haunting, psychological experience that retains its disturbing atmosphere and gore.
However, one thing the studio needs to make sure of is that it doesn’t completely abandon the brutality that defined the game, but perhaps toning it down a notch in favor of a more immersive and thought-provoking experience will do the work.
In the end, Rockstar has shown time and time again that it can do much more than just open-world action. But, will it take us back to Manhunt‘s stealth mechanics and show that the series still has some life left in it?
