Forget Egypt, God of War’s Kratos is reportedly set to return to Greece in his next adventure.

At the present time, the future of the God of War franchise remains uncertain.

Admittedly, yes, it feels like a given that it will return but nothing has yet been officially announced by Santa Monica Studio.

Kratos wrapped up the Norse Saga in God of War Ragnarök, although the game’s DLC, Valhalla, did hint at some possible future mythologies he may encounter, including those of Egypt, Japan, and the Aztecs.

That’s why the internet was recently set ablaze by the rumour that Kratos may be heading to Egypt in his next mainline instalment.

It was a casting call that sparked the suggestion, so it’s not exactly finite proof.

Conversely, according to the latest tidbit, Kratos is supposedly venturing back to Greece instead in the studio’s next game.

We had a little taste of home, so to speak, in Valhalla which featured flashbacks to Kratos’ life in Greece.

Those flashbacks now appear to also be a taste of what’s to come.

According to Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson, Santa Monica’s next game will actually be a prequel of sorts, exploring the relationship between young Kratos and his father Zeus in ancient Greece.

He did warn readers not to “run” with the rumour, so this isn’t concrete proof of a prequel, but it’s certainly interesting to hear a completely conflicting report to the earlier Egypt suggestion.

Henderson further added that he didn’t even know if the title was a prequel, explaining that it could be a reboot or remaster.

With many suggesting that there might be a State of Play this week, perhaps we’ll learn more then.

If I had to guess, I wouldn’t be surprised if Santa Monica was remastering the initial trilogy alongside the creation of a truly new saga but that’s simply a stab in the dark.
