Geralt of Rivia’s voice actor, Doug Cockle, says The Witcher game series should be credited for making Andrzej Sapkowski’s book series so popular.

The Witcher franchise is undoubtedly one of the most popular action role-playing game series of all time. The series is critically acclaimed and has sold over 75 million units as of March 2023. It started with 2007’s The Witcher, which laid down the foundation of the franchise, and now, CD Projekt Red is all set to carry forward the franchise with The Witcher 4.

The Witcher video game series is based on the book series of the same name by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski. However, the events taking place in the video game series are after the events of the books. Despite the books being so influential and iconic, the voice actor of Geralt of Rivia, Doug Cockle, believes that the video game series should be credited for popularising the book series.

The voice actor of Geralt of Rivia, Doug Cockle, recently appeared for an interview with GamesRadar and during the conversation, he explained that The Witcher video game series should be credited for popularising Andrzej Sapkowski’s book series. He said,

It’s also the game that brought the books to a wider audience… so this whole wonderful new fantasy world became available to people who had no idea it existed before.

Sapkowski’s The Witcher series has a cult following in Poland and has been translated into 37 languages, selling over 15 million copies as of July 2020. The video game series indeed played a key role in popularising the books, as there was a sharp increase in its popularity, especially after the release of 2015’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Cockle has voiced Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Plus, he will also be voicing the character in the upcoming The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep animated film.

In December 2024, CD Projekt Red presented the cinematic reveal trailer of The Witcher 4 at The Games Awards. The trailer showcased Ciri, now a witcher, as the protagonist of the new game. The trailer was well-received by the fans and has successfully created a lot of anticipation among gamers all over the world.

The Witcher franchise is not only limited to the video game series as r Andrzej Sapkowski’s books were also adapted into a TV series called The Witcher. Henry Cavill played the role of Geralt of Rivia in the first three seasons that were released between 2019 and 2023. A fourth season is in the works, plus it has also been renewed for a fifth and final season.
