A playable build of a third entry in the Star Wars: Battlefront series has leaked online, and fans are lamenting what could have been if the series hadn’t been cancelled in its prime.
A few months ago, something fans thought was impossible finally happened: a playable build of Star Wars: Battlefront III, a follow-up to the 2005 LucasArts title Star Wars: Battlefront II, randomly popped up online.
The build we were graced with is a Nintendo Wii port, and you can take a look at how far along into development it was for yourself here.
Over on the r/StarWars subreddit, fans are mostly just upset that we never got to try this one out for ourselves.
“This is so interesting, I think I see elements from both Force Unleashed and Battlefront Elite Squadron,” commented userThire2199.
“Would’ve loved to actually get this game.”
“If this with modern graphics came out today, people would eat it up,” replied user _Football_Cream_.
“Too bad we missed out on this.”
So, what went wrong? Considering this build of the game seems to be so far along in development, why did it ultimately get canned?
Well, the sad truth is that the developers behind this version of Star Wars: Battlefront III, Free Radical Design, went bust. They did try to finish the game before they went under, but it ultimately proved to be too big a task to finish in time.
Ultimately, the majority of the work was repurposed and used for the PlayStation Portable title Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron, and the comparisons between it and the leaked Wii build of Star Wars: Battlefront III are pretty obvious.
Between this, Pandemic’s cancelled Star Wars: Battlefront III, and EA’s mishandling of Star Wars Battlefront II, it seems that a third entry in the series is well and truly cursed.
