The reboot of one of the oldest Xbox RPGs is facing quite some difficulties. Initially slated for a 2025 release, Fable was pushed back to 2026 to give the developers more time with the game.
An insider has provided further insight into the situation, clarifying that the game’s delay had nothing to do with avoiding GTA 6’s release or its launch on PS5 or Switch 2.
Instead, the insider suggests that Fable’s development process might be troubled.
Why It Matters: Being one of the most anticipated titles for Xbox’s first-party studios, Fable has some serious expectations to look forward to. The troubled development implies that Fable might launch in a rough state.
According to Extas1s, studio Playground Games is facing technical issues with the game’s development. While previously, they’ve only worked on racing games, Fable is the first game outside of their expertise.
As such, the transition of the Forza Tech engine from racing games to an RPG title is seemingly rough. There’s no doubt that Fable looks absolutely gorgeous visually but it’s the gameplay part that lacks.
The early version of the game “was not very exciting,” and the developers are reworking many of the features. Moreover, the entire progression system is also being revised, which will take additional time.
According to the insider, the game is already entertaining, but they want to take it to the “next level,” seeing how studio Playground Games is ambitious about the project.

Supporting this, another insider has doubled down on the situation. According to reputable insider HeisenbergFX4, Fable is facing complications with its development.
