Hogwarts Legacy was, as we’re all well aware, 2023’s best selling game which is why I’m so astounded that it somewhat fumbled its post-launch support.
Allow me to break down my sweeping statement.
The developers at Avalanche Software did an excellent job of ironing out bugs and glitches, but I’ve never seen a title as popular as this deliver so little in the way of post-release content.
A photo mode and a couple of cosmetics … That’s all that’s been dropped in the almost two years since Hogwarts Legacy launched.
As 2023’s best-selling game, I’m imagining fans would’ve eaten up DLC even if it was paid DLC – anything for the chance to, say, visit Diagon Alley or the Ministry of Magic.
There is that rumoured Director’s Cut supposedly in the works (Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier previously claimed Rocksteady devs had been drafted in to help) but you have to wonder whether that’ll ever come to light.
As I said, we’re approaching the two year anniversary, and developers will likely be hard at work planning Hogwarts Legacy 2.
The game hasn’t formally been unveiled but it’s been referenced as a priority by just about every important person going at Warner Bros so it’s certainly a matter of ‘when’ and not ‘if’.
Chances are though that when Hogwarts Legacy 2 does land, it’ll likely leave previous-gen consoles behind.
Back when Hogwarts Legacy finally dropped on previous-gen consoles, I highlighted some of the key differences here at GAMINGbible and fair to say, devs had to make a ton of adjustments to get the game running on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Hogwarts’ exterior bridges were turned into interior corridors to prevent large environments from having to load, while school classrooms were made smaller, exhibiting less detail.
Elsewhere, doorways – which PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC players could walk through with ease – became loading screens for previous-gen players.
As with any franchise, Avalanche is going to have more ambition with its sequel which is good because, let’s face it, Hogwarts Legacy’s wider open world was a tad dull and repetitive.
If adjustments had to be made to run the OG Hogwarts Legacy, the chance of its sequel working on previous-gen machines is slim.
Not impossible, I should stress. Just unlikely.
In fact, the additional months that Avalanche devs spent working on the previous-gen and Nintendo Switch ports could explain why there was so little in the way of post-launch content.
Of course, we’ll have a much better idea of the game’s launch platforms when we hear an update on where the sequel actually is in its development cycle, but I’d prepare yourself for the news that it might be moving on from certain machines.
