Fans are eagerly anticipating GTA VI, which is scheduled to release later this year from Rockstar Games.

With many trying to decide which console to buy it for, it might be worth taking this claim from an ex Rockstar Games dev, on board.

Speaking on the Kiwi Talkz podcast, and spotted by GamesRadar+, Mike York, a former animator for Rockstar Games, spoke on whether GTA VI would run at 60fps on current hardware.

“I don’t know if they’ll be able to pull off 60fps,” said York.

He continued by saying, “I think they’re gonna be shooting for 30fps – and a locked 30fps, meaning it never dips below that. They’re gonna try to optimise as much as they can.”

This isn’t much of a surprise, given just how big GTA VI is reportedly set to be.

A huge, bustling city filled with unique animations and countless details is going to hit fps.

York went on to say, “Once it’s on PC, it’ll probably get super optimised and changed and new graphics cards that come out, and you’ll be able to run it at 60fps probably at that time.”

There’s a slim chance that the game will run at 60fps on the PS5 Pro due to the upscaling technology built into the new console.

However, York doubts even that, explaining, “I don’t think it’ll get the 60fps raw out the gate on a base console. PS5, for instance. Maybe PS5 Pro, or whatever, but I still don’t think so.”

If frames are important to you, and you have a PC capable, waiting for the eventual release might be worthwhile.

Of course, we have no idea when GTA VI will even debut on PC – it could be a few years after the console release.
