Anthony Mackie Teases Captain America vs. Evil Steve Rogers: ‘Like De Niro & Pacino in Heat’

Anthony Mackie is set to make his debut as Captain America in his first solo film this Friday. Captain America: Brave New World will see Sam Wilson take on Red Hulk while laying the groundwork for the next iteration of the Avengers, which he is confirmed to lead as the MCU gears up for a multiversal showdown against Doctor Doom.

However, things get more complicated with Chris Evans confirmed to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, and strong rumors suggesting he may return as a variant of Captain America.

If this proves true, Wilson may be forced to take on his former mentor in an intense confrontation.

Mackie likened the potential battle to the iconic showdown between Robert De Niro and Al Pacino in Heat. “I think it goes back to the fight sequence between Iron Man and Captain America in Civil War. I think there’s a certain understanding between the two Caps that once they come together, just like with Bucky, I mean there’s a certain understanding between the two characters,” Mackie explained. “That’s what I would be most excited about, the idea of being able to act it out instead of duke it out.”

The variant storyline continues with Iron Man as well. With Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU as Victor Von Doom, Wilson may find himself up against another former ally. Despite Stark’s new villainous identity, Wilson still maintains ties to Stark Industries.

Sam Wilson is still cool with Tony Stark,” Mackie noted. “Sam still actually works with Stark Industries because a lot of his beginning tech came from Stark Industries. It’s just that the new suit comes from Wakanda. It’s like he gets the suit from Stark, then takes it to Wakanda and gets the upgrades added to it.”

Mackie also commented on his future as both Avenger and Captain America:

I think there’s a very fine line between being Captain America and being an Avenger. I think he would succeed as an Avenger because he’s a leader of men. He has the military background. He was a counselor, so he has the mental aptitude to talk to people and talk them off the ledge.
