Starting Oblivion Remastered‘s Arena questline is as easy as entering the Bloodworks and signing up as a combatant, but it takes many fights of increasing difficulty and maybe some extra questing to usurp Agronak gro-Malog, better known as the Gray Prince, as the Grand Champion.

There’s some fanfare and potential controversy in-game when you defeat the Gray Prince and become the Imperial City Arena’s Grand Champion, but Reddit user Appropriate_Bill8244 celebrated the accomplishment by stepping wholly into the role, assuming the Gray Prince’s usual position in the Bloodworks, repeatedly bashing their sword into a wooden practice target. This is in imitation of the Gray Prince, who, prior to the fight against him, spends all of his time in the Bloodworks, smacking his sword against that same wooden target, apparently the extent of his training regiment.

One Of Oblivion’s Beloved Quirks

Oblivion is beloved for its quirks, and one of the most prominent is the bizarre behavior of NPCs. The Gray Prince is a perfect example, being a prominent character in one of Oblivion and Oblivion Remastered‘s main questlines. The Arena is a prominent locale in the Imperial City, and it’s hard to ignore the half-orc in the Bloodworks who is incessantly practicing his swordsmanship. He’s gassed up by the Arena’s blademaster, Owyn, and has been the Grand Champion for nearly a decade, but his oddly rigid routine is what has endeared him to longtime fans.

Appropriate_Bill8244’s homage to the Gray Prince is perfect, even down to the cadence with which they strike the wooden target. It’s the exact droning beat that has come to define both the Gray Prince and the atmosphere of the Arena’s Bloodworks. They even have the details of the Gray Prince’s equipment correct – holding a longsword and shield while wearing the Grand Champion’s raiment, the Raiment of Valor.

Questlines that are little more than a series of combat challenges like this are very common in games, especially RPGs of Oblivion‘s era – I have similarly fond memories of fighting as the Mysterious Stranger in the dueling ring on Taris in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Becoming the Grand Champion in Oblivion involves quite a lot of fights, though. You have to win 21 fights – three in each of the seven ranks – before you can challenge the Gray Prince for their title.

Even then, the Gray Prince’s match-up has an extra quest attached to it, revolving around the famed gladiator’s lineage. This takes you all the way out to the Gold Coast, to a fort called Crowhaven, northwest of Anvil, far to the Imperial City’s west. The fights in the Arena are fairly straightforward, owing to Oblivion‘s rather shallow combat mechanics, but it’s still a long climb to the top, so you should celebrate however you can. There’s plenty of bespoke content to enjoy in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, but part of its sandbox appeal is taking the time to goof off and do things like repeatedly attack a wooden target in the Bloodworks, just like the Gray Prince used to.
