Netflix’s spy thriller The Recruit returned for its second season on Jan. 30. If you’ve already binged all six episodes, you’re probably wondering if a third season is on the way. Here’s everything to know about The Recruit Season 3, including the latest updates from Netflix and the show’s creator.
The Recruit follows Owen Hendricks (Noah Centineo), a rookie CIA lawyer eager to prove himself while navigating the high-stakes world of international espionage. In Season 2, his assignment takes him to South Korea, where he’s tasked with rescuing Nan Hee, the wife of Korean NIS (National Intelligence Service) agent Jang Kyun. Warning: Spoilers ahead for the ending of Season 2.
Owen teams up with Jang, Lester, Dawn, her ally Dodge, and Yoo Jin Lee. Together, they embark on a mission that leads them to Russia. He also turns to Russian mafia member Nichka for intel on the kidnapping, but his trust in her ultimately backfires. At first, Nichka provides Owen and Jang with credible intel, telling them that Nan is alive and arranging for them to buy her release.

Owen devises a plan to rescue Nan from the Yakuza, who are holding her in eastern Russia. He and Jang will pose as hostage negotiators, refusing to hand over the money until they confirm Nan Hee is alive. Once they do, Dawn and her team will ambush the Yakuza before they can count the cash, then escape to Yoo Jin Lee’s ship. However, the plan goes sideways when a Russian patrol boat arrives. Jang is shot, and both he and Nan Hee are captured.
Defying Lester’s orders, Owen refuses to leave Russia, determined to rescue Jang and Nan. Meanwhile, Nichka’s true loyalties are revealed: she has secretly promised her Russian mob bosses a CIA agent. When she attempts to take Owen hostage, he knocks her out and stuffs her in the trunk of her own car.
The CIA orders Dawn to eliminate Jang before the Russians can extract any intel from him during interrogation. Fortunately, Owen reaches Jang and Nan Hee just in time to save them. As Dawn sets up with a sniper rifle, ready to take the shot, Nichka intervenes and kills her. Their fight creates the perfect distraction, allowing Owen, Jang, and Nan to escape into the sea.
In the final moments of Season 2, Yoo Jin Lee’s boat rescues the trio. As the Russian coast guard closes in, an American submarine surfaces just in time, saving them.

Netflix has not yet renewed The Recruit for a third season. The streamer typically analyzes viewership data over several weeks or months before committing to a renewal. The show debuted in the Top 3 on Netflix’s U.S. TV streaming charts on Jan. 31, trailing behind No. 1 The Night Agent, which has already secured a Season 3 renewal.
The creator of The Recruit, Alexi Hawley, is hopeful that the show will see another season. He recently told Deadline that they are waiting for “Netflix to officially do their thing with it,” but he’s feeling “positive” so far.
He continued, “There’s a lot of goodwill inside Netflix towards the show and towards Noah; I think they very much feel like Noah is a homegrown star, which he is. So, I’m feeling super positive about it, as positive as you can feel in this town at this time.”
What Could The Recruit Season 3 Be About?

While Hawley has not started on the script for Season 3, he hinted at some potential plot points. By the end of Season 2, Owen’s future in the CIA remains uncertain, especially since the agency hasn’t treated him kindly. After all, Lester also betrayed Owen and tried to leave him behind, which is bound to have lasting effects in the next season.
“Well, the irony is that actually, we say it in the first episode, you need to win; If you win, nothing matters. And so a bit of the setup that we’re setting up for Season 3 is that that win actually will reverse all of that stuff because everybody wants to be attached to that,” he teased.
Hawley added that Owen doesn’t know any of that at the moment. “I love how complicated that last beat is, and Noah is so good. Because, coming into the season, he was like, I’m quitting this job, this job is not healthy, it brings out the worst to me. And then by the end, he’s had this win, he’s been through the fire, he’s managed to navigate all these different forces and declare victory.”
The creator added that it would be nice if Season 3 could be shot internationally again. “We were in Korea for about a month shooting that stuff, so it’d be great to do that again. I’m not sure exactly where I want to go yet. I feel like we’ve done Russia, we’ve done Korea. So maybe Latin America, Africa would be exciting,” he said. “The American audiences don’t get exposed to Africa a lot in our storytelling for lots of reasons, but I think that would be really interesting.”
