Two Years Later, Baldur’s Gate 3 Keeps Leveling Up With New Subclasses While Path of Exile 2 Still Fumbles With the Ones It Has

Baldur’s Gate 3 continues to impress gamers with new subclasses. Meanwhile, Path of Exile 2 can’t even perfect what it has.

Baldur's Gate 3 and Path of Exile

Baldur’s Gate 3 took over the entire gaming world by storm back in 2023. The Larian Studios title established itself as the Game of the Year and managed to earn multiple accolades from players and critics alike. Seriously, not only did it live upon the legacy of the Baldur’s Gate franchise, but it pushed it forward.

However, Larian isn’t just done with the game yet. The developer has finally given us a release date for the highly anticipated Patch 8, which is set to bring new features and, best of all, new subclasses. It’s supposed to be the final update for the game, and Larian wants to go out with a bang.

While Larian continues to elevate its RPG with new classes, we also have Grinding Games’ Path of Exile 2, which can’t even balance out its existing ones, let alone bring new ones to the table.

New subclasses are coming to Baldur’s Gate 3

Shdowheart's sass and arrogance was heavily dialed down by Larian.

Larian Studios gave the community an update about the upcoming Patch 8 via the official Baldur’s Gate 3 account on Twitter/X. It’s confirmed that the update will be released on 15th April 2025, meaning it’s just days away from a release.

That’s not all! To celebrate the final update for the game, Larian is planning to go live on Twitch alongside Aoife Wilson and Ross Stephens. With this, players will get a deep look into the new subclasses and features coming in Patch 8.

What’s really special about this update isn’t the addition of the crossplay and photo mode. Larian is bringing a new subclass for every class in the game. This means that there will be 12 new ways to develop a character.

Keep in mind that Baldur’s Gate 3 already offers 46 subclasses to pick from, and when you put multiclassing into the equation, the number of build options one can get expands further. Larian has managed to nail the subclass experience in its RPG and wants to take it further with the next update.

However, the same can’t be said for Path of Exile 2. Right from the game’s release, players have voiced their concerns against Ascendency Classes in the game and believe it’s extremely frustrating to grind towards and lack variety. Grinding Gears’ still hasn’t been able to find the perfect balance and continues to struggle with its take on subclasses.

The future of Baldur’s Gate franchise looks bright

Considering the success Baldur’s Gate 3 went on to achieve, one might think that Larian is already working hard on a successor. However, that’s not the case, as the developer is stepping away from the franchise and turning its attention to new projects.

This doesn’t mean that the Baldur’s Gate franchise is coming to an end. A few weeks ago, at the 2025 Game Developer’s Conference, IGN got the chance to sit down and chat with the Baldur’s Gate owner, Hasbro.

When asked about the future of the series, Hasbro SVP of digital games Dan Ayoub stated that a number of parties are interested in the Baldur’s Gate franchise and it’s working on future projects.

Hasbro wants to carefully approach the successor to Baldur’s Gate 3 as it wants to meet high expectations. Considering that it took Larian 7 years to develop the game, a sequel is years away, but it’s going to be a real challenge for Hasbro to find a worthy developer to craft the game.
