A synopsis for the show reads: “In true Hobbit style, Billy and Dom will wander on foot, searching the hidden side of cities, hunting down their next adventure, taking recommendations, changing plans as they embark on their quest to Eat the World.” The duo released a new trailer ahead of the show’s premiere, which is set for sometime in 2025. One scene shows Monaghan and Boyd running into Sir Ian McKellen, who famously portrayed Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies.
The official Instagram account for Billy and Dom: Eat the World posted photos, including one of McKellan and the pair in his London pub, The Grapes. “Filming is complete and @billyanddomeattheworld is starting to come out around the world,” read the caption. “Watch this space for announcements,” added the caption, which stated that the first season of the show will see the pair journey to eight places seeking “culinary adventures.” The two will be visiting destinations such as London, the Outer Hebrides, California, Japan, Texas, Costa Rica, Manchester and Switzerland.
The Pair Have Been Friends for 20+ Years
“It’s so exciting to now take that passion we have for travel and new experiences into this TV show,” Boyd said previously. Monaghan added, “I have known Billy for over 20 years and in that time have been lucky enough to travel with him extensively. Since The Return of the King, (we’ve) been looking for something new to do on screen together that people who follow our careers may enjoy.”

What is Next in Terms of Lord of the Rings Films?
Next on the docket in the Lord of the Rings franchise is 2026’s The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. Recently, the project’s co-writer/producer Philippa Boyens confirmed that the upcoming movie will run parallel with the early events of The Fellowship of the Ring. Boyens told The Playlist that The Hunt for Gollum will be set during The Fellowship of the Ring, during the time after Bilbo Baggins’ 111th birthday party and prior to the Mines of Moria.
The film begins with Gandalf sending Aragorn on a quest to find Gollum because he is afraid the creature may reveal information about the One Ring to Sauron. “Yes, it’s deliberately the bridging film and the story we wanted to tell,” Boyens said. She added that the story “does center on Gollum/Smeagol, so it’s a little bit of an origin story going on, but when you delve into it, as you do with anything Professor Tolkien wrote, you see the layers and layers of story that’s underneath there and how interconnected they all are.”
The Hunt for Gollum Acknowledges the Story is Tricky
Boyens did admit that the film is “tricky” to write because fans already are aware of “the fate of several of the characters.” However, she said she was not going to let that deter her, saying, “you kind of then have to use that to your advantage as a storyteller.”
The Lord of the Rings trilogy is streaming on Max. The Hunt for Gollum is expected to hit theaters in 2026, but an exact release date has not been announced.
