Netflix’s Adolescence is reportedly returning for Season 2 despite being a limited series. But it’s not alone—five other shows broke the same rule!

Netflix’s overnight hit series, Adolescence, pulled a plot twist bigger than any of its episodes. The show is reportedly returning for Season 2! The wild part? Owen Cooper is making headlines for his chances of setting a new Emmys record with his performance in the Best Limited Series.
You know what that means? Adolescence isn’t supposed to have any further seasons. Yet, as it turns out Stephen Graham’s show isn’t the only one to pull this stunt. There are five other buzzy shows that have already broken the same rule, proving that sometimes, good TV just can’t be contained to one season.

Netflix’s Adolescence gets big updates about season 2
After Netflix’s Adolescence left us disturbed, heartbroken, and shocked at the capabilities of a teenager under the influence of social media, Stephen Graham‘s show is reportedly returning to haunt us some more. After the lead actor Owen Cooper made headlines for joining the Emmy race for his performance in Best Limited Series, the show is now breaking the very category.
According to Deadline reports, following the success of Adolescence, Brad Pitt’s production company Plan B Entertainment, is reportedly planning to make what could become a second season of the show. The production company’s co-presidents Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner told the outlet that they have been speaking to director Philip Barantini about the “next iteration” of the show.

Well, it seems that even Netflix might welcome the idea, especially after the show amassed 114.5M views since its March 13 release, and found its place on Netflix’s Most Popular English-Language TV. Although nothing has been officially confirmed, and neither do we know anything about the plot, word on the street is that Adolescence might be coming back for season 2.
Five Best Limited Series winners with Season 2
Now, while Adolescence is getting all the eye rolls for its alleged decision to return with season 2, despite Owen Cooper being in the running for his role in Best Limited Series—it’s not alone in this rebellious club. There are five other award-winning shows that were crowned as Best Limited Series, only to return with some more drama next season.
Remember Big Little Lies? It was supposed to be a one-season ride full of secrets, lies, and fancy wine glasses. But after winning the Best Limited Series Emmy Award in 2017, Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, and Zoë Kravitz, returned with more chaos in this psychological dark dramedy.
Now, take The White Lotus for example, despite winning the Golden Globe for Best Limited Series in 2023, it turned out to be not so limited. Well, Mike White‘s show can still be considered for its decision to return with more seasons, because it’s an anthological show with new casts each season.

But then there’s Fargo, which despite winning an Emmy Award for Outstanding Miniseries in 2014, ended up with 5 seasons, with the same recurring cast appearing in multiple episodes, including Martin Freeman. Other rule-breakers include two of the most popular anthological shows American Crime (Emmy for Outstanding Limited Series in 2016) and Beef (Best Limited Series at 2024 Golden Globe).
Although each of these shows was initially supposed to be a “limited series”, they all ended up with multiple seasons, following their success. However, most of the shows that returned with new seasons turned out to be anthologies. So now, it’s time to see how Adolescence might deal with its potential return.
