Baldur’s Gate 3 has captured the gaming industry thanks to its romance system, which wouldn’t have been possible without one Larian developer.

Why is Baldur’s Gate 3 so successful? Well, it’s due to the fact that it brings incredible gameplay, storyline, and adventure. However, that’s not the only thing that made the game a smash hit. The game’s romance system is considered to be the best in the industry and wouldn’t have achieved the heights without one dedicated developer.

Baldur’s Gate 3 comes with multiple outcomes and storylines that create endless replayability for hundreds of hours. Just like the game’s Dungeons & Dragons source material, gamers can take numerous paths when it comes to a character’s love life.

In Baldur’s Gate 3, there are a number of different romances gamers can get involved in, ranging from full-fledged relationships to one-time flings with multiple NPCs. Larian Studios has nailed the game’s romance system, as players like seeing their characters fall in love, go through the relationship, and have a future.

While talking with GamerRant, the game’s lead writer, Adam Smith, opened up about every bit of development that went into the romance system and how Larian Studios managed to achieve success with it.

Because even if you’re the one who wrote it, the artists made it look good, and the voice actor performed the hell out of it. The answer is always because somebody did their job really well. That’s how it works.

According to Smith, Larian managed to work out the game’s romance system by dedicating one single person ” who literally worked out all other permutations.” This developer alone designed every interaction and came up with detailed dialogue requests.

Larian’s team then wrote and tested all the dialogues in the game and refined them in a manner that felt natural. Each romance companion in the game received its very own dedicated writer who understood the theme. The developer wouldn’t have managed to build the romance system in Baldur’s Gate 3 without a total team effort.

Baldur’s Gate 3 has a strong future ahead

It’s confirmed that Larian is moving from Baldur’s Gate 3 to work on a brand-new project that is still under wraps. However, that doesn’t mean that the studio’s biggest hit won’t receive any further updates.

In 2025, Larian is planning to drop Patch 8 for Baldur’s Gate 3. One of the first additions we’ll see with his patch is cross-play, with full cross-progression on all platforms. Gamers will be able to use the Larian Network System and partner up in multiplayer lobbies.

The patch will also bring a dedicated Photo Mode to the RPG. This will allow players to take pictures of their favorite characters anywhere. We will also see twelve brand-new subclasses for every class in the game right now.
