Within a couple of days of Kate Middleton announcing her cancer diagnosis publically, several videos and images surfaced on the internet with ‘deep-fake’ claims from those who posted them. Among such clips shared online, it appeared to show that the Princess of Wales’ ring magically ‘vanished’ as she was using hand gestures to explain the story of battling cancer. There are three such images and purported footage from the 42-year-old Royal’s original message that came on Friday. However, it can be safely added that the assertions made in the viral mini-clips are false as in some cases the videos either are edited or in others, they seem to be taken when Princess Catherine quickly moved her hand.

Several such social media posts with a massive view count attempt to show that the ring of Middleton disappears, suggesting that her video message on cancer diagnosis is generated through regenerative AI. This a bizarre claim that is false as never in the 140-second video, the black and silver ornament goes missing from the future queen’s finger. Moreover, upon slowing it down, the ring is found to be present in each and every frame.

The ring in the second frame appears blurry because Middleton was moving her hand swiftly and the light was reflecting off of it. “The video looks genuine to me – as someone who works extensively in 3d modelling, video, photo editing and AI,” wrote a user on X.

Middleton announced her cancer diagnosis in a video message following her absence in the past few months due to an abdominal surgical procedure. The Royal thanked her supporters and shared an update on the early stages of chemotherapy.

“In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous. The surgery was successful. However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present. My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment,” Middleton, who referred to her cancer diagnosis as a ‘huge shock’, was heard saying in the original message.

The Princess of Wales also acknowledged the consistent support shown by her husband, Prince William. Middleton in the original video posted through Royal Channels on Friday shared that her health is improving. A team of doctors is with her for treatment and recovery purposes.
