Taylor Swift will certainly never go out of style—either as the newly-named number one artist of the century (yes, you read that correctly) or as a fashion icon. But it seems her boyfriend, NFL player Travis Kelce, is right there with her in the fashion department.

The famous couple stepped out for date night in NYC back in late December, and their body language was on full display. But perhaps even more noticeable (and telling about their relationship) were Kelce’s fashion choices, particularly his $225 trucker hat (yes, you also read that correctly).

For their Saturday night date, Swift donned a crystal covered black coat, a fab black skirt, Louboutin heels and carried a $2,500 tote. How else would a billionaire dress? And though a trucker hat might seem a little low-brow for a dinner with someone as fancy as Tay-Tay, the price tag proves it’s far from low-brow. The hat from Nahmias sells for $225, and Kelce paired it with an eye-catching monochrome look consisting of red denim jeans and a red denim jacket. Obviously, he capped it all off with Louis Vuitton boots.

So what does Kelce’s hat (and matchy-matchy ensemble) say about his relationship and his feelings for Swift? I asked PureWow Fashion Editor Abby Hepworth to weigh in.

She says, “Travis has definitely been taking a bigger interest in fashion since he started dating Swift, but even more so now that they’ve entered the post-honeymoon, ‘serious’ relationship phase.”

Hepworth continues, “He knows she likes to dress up and is meeting her where she’s at, albeit with his own twist. He’s investing in accessories that are more elevated, and that come from more interesting designers/brands, but that still feel true to who he is.”

As for those feelings I mentioned? Our expert says, “Travis knows that Swift cares deeply about what she wears, and by investing more in his own appearance he’s working to make her look cooler and more elevated. By meeting her where she’s at in terms of fashion know-how he’s helping the two of them, as a team, look and feel more united. He’s showing that he cares about the things she cares about and that he clearly wants to make her look good by upping his sartorial efforts.”

Hepworth concludes, “Overall, I think his fashion evolution is proof that Taylor loves and sees him for who he really is—she quite literally brings out his best self, designer trucker hats and all.”
