The 1990s marked the era of the Hollywood power couple. Up there with Brad Pitt and Gwenyth Paltrow and Victoria and David Beckham were Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise, who tied the knot in 1990, adopted two children together, and were married up until the decade’s close; they amicably separated in 2001, citing irreconcilable differences and growing apart—the result of demanding careers that pulled them in different directions—as grounds for their divorce. They went on to date and marry other people (Cruise was briefly connected with Penelope Cruz before getting serious with Katie Holmes, who he wed in 2006; Kidman got engaged to Lenny Kravitz in 2003 before marrying Keith Urban in 2006), but they remain icons of ‘90s. That’s probably why we’re still so curious about their relationship—and the whereabouts of the engagement ring Cruise gave to Kidman ahead of their private nuptials in Colorado in December 1990.

Cruise proposed to Kidman under a year after they met on the set of Days of Thunder, where sparks flew immediately. “He basically swept me off my feet,” Kidman told Vanity Fair in 2002. “I fell madly, passionately in love. I was consumed by it, willingly.” Though the public never learned the story of how he popped the question (the pair was relatively tight-lipped about their romance throughout their decade-long marriage; we don’t even know the date of their actual wedding anniversary), we did get an up-close-and-personal look at the diamond the Top Gun actor gave his fiancé, since she wore it regularly throughout their relationship.

As for the diamond in question? Cruise gave Kidman a vintage-inspired princess-cut diamond, which was flanked by trillion sidestones and set on an intricate platinum band. Unlike many celebrities, who swap out their proposal pieces for statement jewelry on the red carpet, Kidman donned the rock consistently while promoting her films, which she occasionally starred in alongside her husband (in addition to Days of Thunder, the duo also shared the screen in Far and Away (1992) and Eyes Wide Shut (1999)).

As the ‘90s came to an end, though, so did the couple’s marriage. Cruise was the one to file for divorce, which was ultimately finalized in 2001. Kidman actually just debunked a then-viral photo, which showed her walking down the street with her arms wide in what appeared to be a sign of relief (for nearly 25 years, the public thought that Kidman had just left her lawyer’s office and was celebrating the divorce). She told British GQ in 2024, however, that the moment was actually a shot from a movie, and not real life. While Kidman likely did feel a degree of relief at some point, she maintained that the pair’s divorce was upsetting. “He was huge; still is. To me, he was just Tom, but to everybody else, he is huge. But he was lovely to me. And I loved him. I still love him,” she told Ladies’ Home Journal in 2006, just before she wed Urban.

Considering that the fact that Cruise initiated the divorce, the couple parted on what seems to have been good (and potentially even loving) terms, and that the marriage lasted for a decade, it’s more than likely that the Babygirl star kept the engagement ring. Though it’s uncommon for children to use the rings of their parents who have divorced, it’s possible that Kidman is safekeeping the bauble for her daughter, Bella Cruise, who she shares with her ex-husband. That’s purely theory, though: According to multiple outlets, Kidman is not close with her and Cruise’s children (and was last photographed with them in 2007).
