While Oblivion has been getting all the love with its recent remaster, and Fallout 3 is reportedly next, it feels like The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind has been left by the wayside despite the immense cult following the game has amassed since its release all the way back in 2002. To many, Morrowind is the best title in the series thanks to its strange yet rich world-building, revolutionary mechanics, and complexity, which has been lost somewhat with recent titles. Thankfully, Morrowind has not been abandoned by its community, even after twenty-three years since its initial release.

Thanks to being such a fan favorite, many mod authors are still working on the game despite its advanced age, yet these projects are not as popular as the ones that seek to bring the country of Morrowind to other titles. Skyrim has been the go-to game to mod for a while and has been host to many impressive projects, such as Enderal: Forgotten Stories, and the massive Beyond Skyrim projects, one of which will take the Dragonborn to modern Morrowind. Still, one project will help bring excitement to Bethesda’s remastering phase: Skywind.

Skywind Got A Promising Update From Its Modding Team

The Project’s End Point Is Finally In Sight

Skywind seeks to remake all of Morrowind using Skyrim‘s engine, making the game more modern and accessible to modern audiences. A promising twenty-minute gameplay demo was recently uploaded to YouTube by the TESR Skywind channel, and Morrowind has never looked better. According to the video, all 2D art and writing are completed for the game, with almost all NPCs cast. The project is steadily moving along, a good sign considering that many modding projects of this size usually suffer from cancellation because of how large a commitment it is for teams often made up of volunteers.

Skywind is specifically for Skyrim: Special Edition on PC.

Still, Skywind has largely managed to stave off these issues, and with the gameplay demo, it looks like the project won’t be one destined to be nothing but a dream, although there hasn’t been a release date yet. Chances are, it is closer to releasing than Bethesda’s next official remaster, rumored to be Fallout 3, and won’t suffer being overshadowed by one of Bethesda’s projects. It doesn’t seem like Bethesda plans to do much with Morrowind, and Skywind is ensuring that modern-day gamers will get a chance to enjoy one of the classics that redefined the RPG genre.

There Are No Signs That A Morrowind Remaster Is Coming Anytime Soon

Skywind isn’t the only remake project made by fans of Skyrim. Skyblivion seeks to bring Oblivion to Skyrim‘s engine and will release later this year, which has been an unfortunate experience for the team behind it after Oblivion Remastered was shadow-dropped. Unfortunate as it is, Skywind likely won’t suffer the same fate, with Fallout 3 getting a remaster next. It should be expected that Skywind will come out before this, given how little information is available about the Fallout 3 remaster project, so the team won’t see their dreams crushed.

Morrowind is also a few years older than Oblivion, and its visuals look considerably more dated, so Skywind will also benefit from getting a bigger graphical upgrade, relatively speaking. It will probably be hard for Bethesda to sneak another shadow-drop after the stunt it pulled with Oblivion, so if a Morrowind remaster does happen, at least the Skywind team will get more of a heads-up, although time should be on the Skywind team’s side. If the project is released in the next two years, it should be safe from any clashes with Bethesda.

While Skyrim has benefited from re-release after re-release and Oblivion has its shiny, new remaster, there isn’t a modern way to play Morrowind without considerable legwork, and this is a problem that Skywind will solve. Sure, Daggerfall and Arena don’t have modern alternatives either, but Morrowind is when Elder Scrolls found its footing and started to become the IP it is today. It is also regarded as the best in the series by its cult fans, and appeals specifically to young adult fans of the series.

I am barely older than Morrowind, but as someone who has played a ridiculous amount of Skyrim, I have always been fascinated by the third Elder Scrolls title, especially because the Dragonborn DLC is a love letter to it at times. Skywind could be the perfect way to play The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind when it does eventually come out and that’s what makes the project so exciting. The strangeness and mysticism of the game can be experienced without the aches and pains that come with its age.
