The Rachel Zegler-led remake of Walt Disney’s first animated feature film has been mired in controversy even before it hit theaters. From Zegler’s comments criticizing the 1937 film to Disney’s decision to re-imagine the Seven Dwarfs as CGI characters, the film has easily been the most polarizing of Disney’s recent slew of live-action retellings.

CBR’s own 7/10 Snow White review paints a much different picture, albeit while still providing some constructive criticism.
“Starring Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, Snow White is far more than a live-action update on the animated classic. Similar to Disney’s Cinderella remake from 2015, Snow White further fleshes out the titular heroine’s backstory, both with the Evil Queen and her birth parents, which calls back to the original Grimm fairy tale, Schneewittchen. Though the movie aims to honor the legacy of the original movie while updating the story’s more problematic elements, it does fall short on executing its best ideas into a cohesive story… While Snow White’s live-action remake does have solid ideas, a much tighter script and a more nuanced execution would have given the movie equal footing to its animated counterpart. Likewise, better relationship developments between Snow White, the Evil Queen, and the Dwarfs would have easily allowed Zegler’s iteration to surpass her animated counterpart.”
Likely due to its myriad of controversies, Snow White has proceeded to underperform at the box-office, coming in below expectations on its opening weekend. Despite this, the IMDb scores for the movie still seem to indicate significant review-bombing. For comparison, review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes lists the film’s audience approval rating at an incredibly high 73% from over 1,000 verified ratings.
Stars Support Rachel Zegler Amid Snow White Discourse
While Zegler’s support of Palestine has led to an immense backlash that’s translated into Snow White controversy, the actor has received support from a number of her peers in Hollywood. Melissa Barrera, who was fired from Scream 7 after demonstrating support for Palestine, called out what was perceived as a targeted hit piece by Variety. “A newly published hit piece in Variety Magazine attempts to paint Rachel Zegler as difficult and politically radical,” Barrera wrote. “It doesn’t. It makes her look cool as hell and full of integrity.”
Snow White’s Controversies Lead To Disappointing Box Office Numbers

At this point in its box office run, the polarizing Snow White remake doesn’t seem very likely to draw in more viewers anytime soon. In its second weekend, the film grossed just $14.2 million – a significant 66% drop. It finished behind the newly released A Working Man, the Jason Statham-led action thriller film by Suicide Squad director David Ayer.
It seems like IMDb is implementing new measures to try and counter excessive review-bombing, which has previously impacted other films like Star Wars’ The Acolyte and Disney’s other live-action remake, The Little Mermaid.
Even without IMDb’s ratings being taken into consideration, Snow White‘s negative buzz seems to have undoubtedly played a part in the film’s underperformance, with audiences opting to stay home or see other movies rather than get involved in all the controversy.
Snow White is now playing in theaters.
