Liam Payne’s In Memoriam Breaks Fans—But They Don’t Want More Tributes, Here’s Why!

Liam Payne was honored with a Grammys tribute.

After his death in Oct. 2024, the musician’s absence immediately sent shockwaves through pop fans globally. As they tuned into watch the award show, fans expected to see him featured in the In Memoriam annual tribute, but the video totally caught them off guard.

It featured video clips of the star during his days in boyband One Direction. The footage opened up with Liam standing alongside his bandmates on a rooftop as they overlooked a screaming crowd of fans below. “I never expected any of this to happen,” he said in a featured old audio clip. “You actually sit and think about it – we’ve done some amazing things.”

Alongside music from Chris Martin, Liam was seen posing in front of a graffiti wall and performing onstage during One Direction’s stadium tours. One fan on X, formerly known as Twitter: “I don’t want tributes, I want Liam back. He never deserved this at such a young age.”

Another said: “the tribute to liam really has me bawling :(( seeing stuff like this and it still just doesn’t even feel real. liam payne forever & always”

“Enjoying the grammys and then getting hit with the liam payne tribute felt like getting hit by a semi truck,” another noted. A fourth added: “they put liam’s video first during the tribute, and I was NOT prepared… 🙁 it doesn’t feel real till this day.”

The 67th annual Grammy Awards ceremony kicked off on Sunday, Feb. 2 at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California. The Grammy Awards is considered one of the biggest nights in music and celebrates the best in recordings, compositions, and artists from the past year. This years’ awards will be hosted by none other than comedian Trevor Noah, where he will also be recognized as a nominee.

During the night, fans will be treated with performances from a number of chart-topping artists including current Grammy nominees Benson Boone, Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, Charli XCX, Doechii, RAYE, Sabrina Carpenter, Shakira, and Teddy Swims. Taylor Swift, Anthony Kiedis & Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Cardi B, Gloria Estefan, Olivia Rodrigo, Queen Latifah, SZA, and Will Smith have also all been announced as presenters for the evening.

Speaking on the upcoming ceremony, Recording Academy® CEO Harvey Mason JR. said in a press release: “The upcoming GRAMMY Awards won’t just be about celebrating and honoring the best in music this year, it will also show how the power of music can help rebuild, uplift and support those in need. We are thrilled that so many artists in our community are banding together at this time to show support for their fellow music makers and others impacted by the recent wildfires.”
