Terrifying and Unstoppable: The Truth Behind Chaos Magic in ‘The Witcher’

The Witcher cast: Geralt, Yennefer, and Cirilla

The Witcher is well known to be full of terrible monsters, breathtaking fights and powerful magic. While the monsters and battles are easy to understand, the magic that lives within the world of The Witcher can be a difficult subject. Chaos, or The Power, is what magicians use to fulfill their wildest dreams and commit heinous crimes. Chaos magic has razed kingdoms and made Kings. It’s one of the most powerful forces in The Continent, and Netflix’s The Witcher has made it clear that Chaos will be the death of everyone if Geralt, Ciri and Yennefer can’t find a way to stop it.

The sorceresses of Aretuza teach each new class about Order, Chaos, and their place within them. Many of these young sorceresses and mages can automatically sense the presence of Chaos, while others like Yennefer require hours and hours of hard and devastating work to find their connection. Chaos and Order are the source of all magic in The Continent, but Chaos became much more powerful after the Conjunction of Spheres. Chaos is the aggressive side of magic, while Order is the more defensive. Mastering both sides allows a sorceress or mage to attain balance and power.

The Dangers of Chaos in The Witcher

The Witcher has barely begun to scratch the surface about Chaos and the Conjunction. In the books by Andrzej Sapkowski, the Conjunction was when Chaos came to the Continent and brought monsters and humans along with it. When Chaos was mastered by humans, even more trouble followed. When used for evil purposes, or even dangerously, Chaos can unleash a torrent of terrible actions across the land. When Yennefer used fire magic during the Battle of Sodden Hill, she tapped into pure Chaos. She was aggressive and deadly, and wanted to watch the world burn.

Yennefer and Ciri are the best examples of Chaos magic within The Witcher universe. Yennefer represents the aggressive side of the magic. She is wild and untamed, and brings a chaotic energy with her. While Ciri represents the true strength of magic. Her Elder Blood allows her to use Chaos in ways that no one else can. Ciri can use more primordial magic. She can tap into the Monoliths and call forth new monsters, or even walk between worlds. The Monoliths act as intersections for Chaos. Intersections are areas where magic, and by extension, its users are much more powerful.

Chaos Magic Can Destroy The Continent in The Witcher

The balance of Order and Chaos is a delicate one. Season 2 of The Witcher showed that Chaos is rising and becoming more and more powerful. If Chaos was born from the Conjunction, it may be that Chaos magic is looking to bring something even more powerful to The Continent. As Ciri’s abilities grow, the Monoliths’ power may also grow. If her and the Monoliths are able to bring new monsters into existence, enough power may let them create a second Conjuncture and destroy the Continent. Geralt’s choices and decisions with Ciri can either save or destroy his world.

Chaos magic is a power that can allow magicians to do incredible things. They can create portals, build incredible structures and defend the innocent. Using that same power, they can also bring the world to its knees and watch it suffer. Chaos came from the Conjunction of Spheres and Ciri — a child of the Elder Blood — may be able to cause one again. As she keeps discovering the mysterious Monoliths, the likelihood that she unleashes more Chaos magic on the world becomes higher and higher.
