Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz’s 2010 Action Comedy Takes Over Streaming as Diaz Preps Her Comeback!

Knight and Day

Before taking a long break from acting, Cameron Diaz starred in several action films. One of them included one of the biggest action stars of our time, Tom Cruise.

In 2010, Diaz and Cruise joined forces for the action comedy Knight and Day. While the film was not a huge box office success, despite the joint star power, the movie is experiencing new success on streaming services. Per FlixPatrol, Knight and Day is currently the third title on Netflix’s Top 10 global charts, even without it being available to U.S. subscribers.

Knight and Day is only available on Paramount+ and Prime Video for U.S. subscribers, but it is available in other places across the globe, and it hit the Top 10 in many places, including the UK, Australia, Spain, and Germany. It overtook several titles including the popular Carry-On, and the psychological horror Ma.

Knight and Day stars Cruise as Roy Miller, a secret agent who is on the run from the CIA. He accidentally drags Diaz’s June Havens, a classic car restorer, into his messy life after colliding at the airport.

The official logline reads, “June Havens chats up her charming seatmate on a flight out of Kansas, but she doesn’t realize that she will soon land in the middle of an international adventure. The fellow passenger, Roy Miller, is a covert operative who claims he has been set up to take a fall. Now his reluctant partner, June must dodge bullets in Boston, leap rooftops in Austria and evade bulls in Spain, while she and Roy learn that trust is the most important survival skill.”

Knight and Day comes from two-time Oscar-nominated director James Mangold, whose credits include 2013’s The Wolverine, 2017’s Logan, 2019’s Ford v Ferrari, and 2024’s A Complete Unknown. Aside from Diaz and Cruise, the action comedy features even more famous names like Viola Davis, Peter Sarsgaard, Gal Gadot, and Paul Dano.

Even with all the star power, the movie failed to make a huge profit. With a big budget of $117 million, Knight and Day ended its theatrical run with $258.7 million, which means it managed to gain at least twice its budget to cover its marketing and distribution sales. It further added $32.8 million from DVD and Blu-ray sales (via The Numbers), sending the title into profit land.

The movie’s reviews also didn’t help its odds. The action comedy has an unfortunate 51% score from the critics, leading to a “rotten” score. The audience agreed, giving the film an even lower score of 49%.

Tom Cruise Is Experiencing a Lot of Success on Streaming

With one more installment to go in his long-running Mission: Impossible franchise, Tom Cruise proves he’s not only a bankable action hero on the big screen, but also on streaming. Knight and Day is not the only title starring Cruise that is currently in the charts on streaming, with three more titles finding success online.

The Paramount+ subscribers are big Cruise fans because, on Jan. 15, Flixpatrol highlights, as the first three titles all star the actor. At the top of the charts is his huge 2022 hit, Top Gun: Maverick. The action film stole the number one spot from a different Cruise film, 2016’s Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, in the second spot, and its prequel, 2012’s Jack Reacher. The interest in the two Jack Reacher films might be because of the upcoming Season 3 of Prime Video’s Reacher, which stars Alan Ritchson as the leading character, as Cruise’s run as the character wasn’t a huge hit.

Meanwhile, Cameron Diaz will return to movies after a 10-year break. She will star in the upcoming Netflix film Back in Action with Jamie Foxx. The film will premiere on Jan. 17.
