Tom Cruise is still flying high with the success of his 2022 blockbuster. Over two years after the release of Top Gun: Maverick, the hit sequel continues to find more success on streaming.
Top Gun: Maverick was a follow-up film that was 36 years in the making, serving as a sequel to the 1986 movie Top Gun. Joseph Kosinski directed Maverick, which was written by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie. Along with Cruise reprising his role from the original, the movie also starred Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, and Ed Harris. Val Kilmer also made a special appearance to reunite with Cruise, bringing Maverick and Iceman together again one last time.
Top Gun 3 Is in the Early Works
According to reports, a third Top Gun movie is in the planning stages following the immense success of Maverick in 2022. However, the project is not speeding along very quickly, which comes down to the busy schedule of its lead star. The film would need to be put together at a time when there’s a rare window open in Cruise’s schedule, and co-star Miles Teller recently confirmed that he still hasn’t heard anything definitive yet on when Top Gun 3 will come to be.
“We’ll see what happens,” Teller told Collider. “All I know is that Tom has said that, since he’s the first to know, he’ll give me enough time to get back into Top Gun shape. And that’s all I asked. But there’s a lot of excitement at both ends, from the fans and from the Top Gun team.”
“We had preliminary stuff,” producer Jerry Bruckheimer told Games Radar in May. “We’re not there yet. [There’s] ways to go.”
Top Gun: Maverick is streaming on Paramount+.
