Tom Cruise’s $1.5 Billion Blockbuster Dominates Streaming 2 Years Later!

Tom Cruise smiles in Top Gun Maverick

Tom Cruise is still flying high with the success of his 2022 blockbuster. Over two years after the release of Top Gun: Maverick, the hit sequel continues to find more success on streaming.

Per FlixPatrol, Top Gun: Maverick ranked at No. 5 on the Paramount+ Top 10 list of movies streaming in the United States. The legacy sequel landing on the streaming chart comes more than two years after its release in 2022 when it obliterated the box office upon debut. The film ultimately earned nearly $1.5 billion worldwide, serving as the highest-grossing movie of Cruise’s career. It also won an Oscar for Best Sound and garnered universal praise, with respective critics’ and audience scores at Rotten Tomatoes of 96% and 99%.

Top Gun: Maverick was a follow-up film that was 36 years in the making, serving as a sequel to the 1986 movie Top Gun. Joseph Kosinski directed Maverick, which was written by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie. Along with Cruise reprising his role from the original, the movie also starred Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, and Ed Harris. Val Kilmer also made a special appearance to reunite with Cruise, bringing Maverick and Iceman together again one last time.

Top Gun 3 Is in the Early Works

According to reports, a third Top Gun movie is in the planning stages following the immense success of Maverick in 2022. However, the project is not speeding along very quickly, which comes down to the busy schedule of its lead star. The film would need to be put together at a time when there’s a rare window open in Cruise’s schedule, and co-star Miles Teller recently confirmed that he still hasn’t heard anything definitive yet on when Top Gun 3 will come to be.

“We’ll see what happens,” Teller told Collider. “All I know is that Tom has said that, since he’s the first to know, he’ll give me enough time to get back into Top Gun shape. And that’s all I asked. But there’s a lot of excitement at both ends, from the fans and from the Top Gun team.”

Back in January 2024, Glen Powell also said to Variety of the announcement that a third film was happening, “There is going to be some fun stuff being announced soon…but it was confidential to me. I talk to [Joseph] Kosinski, [Tom] Cruise, and Jerry [Bruckheimer] all the time. There is stuff happening and it sounds very exciting. I don’t know when I’ll be going back…I’m sure there is a jet waiting for me sometime in the future.”

“We had preliminary stuff,” producer Jerry Bruckheimer told Games Radar in May. “We’re not there yet. [There’s] ways to go.”
