Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie are set to collaborate once again following the highly anticipated release of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, with filming set to begin soon on their next film, Broadsword.

According to a report from Production Bulletin, Cruise and McQuarrie plan to begin filming their new epic World War II film, Broadsword, in July 2025. The project was first announced exactly one year earlier, in July 2024. The next Mission: Impossible movie, widely speculated to be Cruise’s final entry in the franchise, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, is set to be released just a few months prior, on May 23, 2025. Broadsword will mark the fifth collaboration between Cruise and McQuarrie as actor and director, and their ninth film collaboration overall.

Broadsword will reportedly film in multiple countries, with production set to take place in both the United Kingdom and France. Other recent Tom Cruise films that have been filmed in the United Kingdom include Mission: Impossible – The Final ReckoningMission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, and Mission: Impossible – Fallout. McQuarrie is also credited as a writer on Broadsword, making it the seventh Tom Cruise film he has written to date. The film’s international locations continue the duo’s tradition of delivering visually stunning, globe-spanning cinematic experiences.

What is Broadsword About?

The plot of Broadsword is set during the height of World War II, following the story of an S.O.E. operation. A battle-hardened Marine sergeant crashes in France, becoming the sole survivor. Determined to complete his mission, he teams up with a resilient young girl. Together, they must navigate treacherous terrain, evade relentless pursuers, and strive to reunite with their team amidst the chaos of war. Cruise has previously explored war themes in films like Valkyrie, where he portrayed a key figure in a plot to assassinate Hitler.

Man of Steel actor Henry Cavill and Inception actress Marion Cotillard have also been mentioned for roles in Broadsword, according to the report. This follows earlier reports in July 2024, where Cavill and Cotillard were first mentioned as potential cast members for Broadsword. As of now, there has been no official announcement regarding Cavill and Cotillard’s involvement in the project. Cavill previously starred alongside Cruise as a memorable adversary to his Ethan Hunt character in Mission: Impossible – Fallout. Cotillard, meanwhile, is no stranger to epic war-themed dramas, having delivered a critically acclaimed performance in Allied.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning will be released on May 23, 2025.
