Yoko Taro, the mastermind behind games likeĀ NierĀ andĀ Drakengard, has always walked a different path from most developers. His rebellious attitude and refusal to follow the gaming industry norms have earned him quite a reputation. Almost all of Taroās titles are unconventional, which is why they feel fresh too.
Apart from being a full-time enigmatic individual, Yoko Taro is also an active X user. Thatās why you will frequently find him interacting with fans and doing Q&A sessions to ease their curiosity. In a recent Q&A session, the Japanese game director strangely said that the world has fewer weird people now. Well, itās definitely a quirky remark.

While the gaming industry provides marketable elements in their AAA titles, Taro has found the recipe for success in his weirdness. The definition of weirdness for him is perhaps the courage to be rebellious and create a game that is out of the box. Despite getting hate from the fans for some āunforgivable reasons,ā Yoko Taro never fails to interact with them on X.
During a Q&A session on X, a fan asked Taro if there are a lot of āweirdosā in the gaming industry. The motivation to ask this question came from a book titled āThe True Biography of Game Creators,ā as mentioned by the fan. To answer this question, Yoko Taro simply said:
Iāve been in the game industry for 30 years, and I feel like there are fewer āweird peopleā now. Iām not sure if this is simply a phenomenon Iāve only seen, if itās something thatās happened to the gaming industry, or if itās something thatās happening to the world as a whole.
Yoko Taro has always believed that the developers who go against the flow in mainstream gaming are the ones who create epochs. A few months ago, he cited Fumito Ueda, the director of ICO, as an epoch-maker in the gaming industry. For those who donāt know, ICO is a game released on PS2 in the year 2001.
With that being said, thereās nothing wrong with Yoko Taroās remark about weirdos in the gaming industry. He has always been a supporter of such developers who put forward the design and storytelling of their games by going against the stereotypes.
Actually, weirdness matters in the gaming industry

Firstly, it would be better to clarify that weirdness in this context means thinking extraordinarily about the gameās features. From character designs to environment, everything matters in this aspect.
In recent times, almost every second game has lacked freshness and innovation. AĀ recent example of this would beĀ FBC: Firebreak, which failed miserably after its launch on June 17, 2025. With all studios copy-pasting stuff from each other, the novelty of games is dying pretty fast. Hence, it becomes important for game designers and creators to introduce something thatās never been seen before.
While most directors fear going against the trend, a few visionaries like Yoko Taro andĀ Hideo Kojima redefine gamingĀ with their hard work.
