Each year to celebrate The Last of Us Day, Naughty Dog likes to surprise fans with new content which aims to keep the much-loved franchise alive – not that it needs help in that area.
Last year was a relatively exciting edition of the the event, bringing us a few new pieces of merchandise, a Steam Deck Animation, and more importantly, our first teaser trailer for season two of HBO’s The Last of Us.
However, there was one more Easter egg released to celebrate the occasion but it was so hidden that many players did not even notice it, despite it staring them right in the face.
Added in September last year, this Easter egg is found in the main menu of The Last of Us Part I, and although subtle, it just goes to show the amount of detail Naughty Dog puts in its games.
Quite simply, players are now able to manually change the lighting on the main menu and despite the in-game secret being unnoticed by many, it is easy to implement.
By default, the main menu for The Last of Us features the iconic window, with vines creeping through and sunset-like lighting streaming into the room from beyond.
However, after entering in a specific code, the lighting will change to make it look a lot earlier in the day.
Eagle-eyed fans will also notice that this specific Easter egg has already been experienced to those who switched to the Left Behind DLC via the menu.
The button sequence is Down, Down, Up, Up, Left, Down, Right, Triangle on console and simply E on PC.
This feature doesn’t affect the game in any way but it is definitely a cool little feature which adds a completely different vibe to the start of a player’s experience with the game.
Over on r/thelastofus, one user said, “This is actually my first time seeing and hearing about it. It’s alright, kinda makes me wish there were more alternative menus to choose from though.”
Maybe this will inspire Naughty Dog to work on the menu in the future, or perhaps make it a feature for a potential The Last of Us Part III.
