James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film has been the subject of much discussion, especially after the release of its trailer. In a recent Q&A, Gunn explained that the battered and bruised version of Superman seen at the beginning of the trailer symbolizes America.
The director described a nation that, while hurt and worn, still represents goodness and hope. The trailer introduces us to a new take on Superman, played by David Corenswet, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.
The roughly two-minute clip shows Superman in a dire situation, bloody and struggling in a frozen wasteland. At one point, we see him using his last bit of strength to call for his dog, Krypto, to come to his rescue.
For Gunn, these images of Superman in a broken state aren’t just about the hero himself; they reflect America as a whole. He pointed out that the country may seem battered right now, but it still stands for goodness, even though it’s been through difficult times. “We do have a battered Superman in the beginning. That is our country,” Gunn said.
This theme of a hurt America is central to the film. Gunn shared his belief in the inherent goodness of people, no matter where they stand politically.
He emphasized that despite the ideological divides, most people are trying their best to be good, even when it’s hard to see through the noise. He also mentioned how this goodness is sometimes under attack from darker voices, making the film a story of human kindness under siege.
The movie’s message is simple: even though there are powerful, darker influences in society, kindness and decency can still shine through.
Gunn called this idea a noble one and believes it will resonate with a wide audience, no matter their political views. The film encourages embracing optimism, highlighting that human goodness can overcome adversity.
Throughout the event, Gunn made it clear that the film is not meant to delve into specific political issues or figureheads. While he’s been outspoken about former President Donald Trump, the movie is focused more on universal values.
The director mentioned how superhero stories have been scrutinized for political undertones, especially in today’s polarized world. However, Gunn stressed that this film is meant to stand apart from past DC installments that have been accused of pushing darker political messages or “fascistic power fantasies.”
One of Gunn’s main goals with this reboot is to move away from themes that have marked previous Superman films. The darker tones of earlier DC films, which some critics linked to authoritarianism, are not something Gunn wants to repeat.
He made it clear that the aim is to tell a story rooted in hope and the basic kindness of humanity, rather than leaning into darker political or power-driven themes. The film, in his view, offers a different take on Superman—one that focuses on positivity and decency, rather than on the often grim narratives of the past.
The director didn’t shy away from acknowledging that the movie is tapping into some current social and political issues, but he made it clear that it’s not about aligning with any one side.
Rather, it’s a reminder of shared human values that should unite people, rather than divide them. By focusing on kindness, decency, and optimism, Gunn hopes to create a Superman story that appeals to everyone, regardless of where they stand politically.
As the film’s release approaches, many are curious to see how Gunn will handle this reboot of the iconic superhero. With his track record in the superhero genre, especially with Guardians of the Galaxy, expectations are high.
The trailer has already generated buzz, with fans eager to see how the director will balance Superman’s classic heroism with the more human side that the film promises.
The film, at its core, is about hope, kindness, and the belief that good can still triumph, no matter how hard the battle may seem. Whether or not this message resonates with audiences, only time will tell. But it’s clear that Gunn is hoping to offer a Superman story that’s as much about the human spirit as it is about the superhero himself.
