‘An Insult to Every Fan’: The Last of Us Season 2 Finale Draws Divisive Reactions Online

Ellie in The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 7 The Last of Us Season 2 finale makes fans take to social media to espouse their wildly different takes on the series so far.

On X, fans of The Last of Us have offered up a variety of differing opinions on the series’ recently aired second season finale. While some have shown their general support for the direction that the series headed with its Season 2 finale, others have gone so far as to describe it as everything from simply “underwhelming” to “the worst season finale possible.

Based on the 2013 video game of the same name and its 2020 sequel, The Last of Us premiered on HBO in 2023 to the delight of fans everywhere. The series stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in the roles of Joel and Ellie, a middle-aged man and teenage girl who band together to survive an apocalyptic world overrun by fungal zombies. While The Last of Us Season 1 charted Joel and Ellie’s journey across the country and their fight against the Firefly militia that would use her brain to develop a vaccine for the zombie infection, the series’ second season saw the pair hounded by the repercussions of their previous actions.

Among the new cast members to take center stage in The Last of Us Season 2 were Gabriel Luna in the role of Joel’s brother Tommy, a former Firefly who gave up on their overtly violent methods, and Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, a member of the Fireflies out for revenge against Joel for killing her father in the previous season. Back in April, The Last of Us creator Neil Druckmann discussed the decision to reveal Abby’s indentity as a Firefly early on in Season 2, rather than keeping it hidden until later on as was done in the sequel game. “When you’re playing as the character, you have this immediate empathy towards them,” Druckmann explained. “We don’t have that [in the streaming series], so then we have to rely on other things.”

Dever herself also recently discussed her relationship to The Last of Us developer Naughty Dog and, more importantly, the franchise itself, which goes back to the very beginnings of the first game when she very nearly portrayed the role of Ellie in her original incarnation. Dever recalled having “met with [The Last of Us co-creator] Neil [Druckman] years ago to potentially play Ellie,” although she didn’t end up getting the role. Years later, Dever would return to the Naughty Dog offices in order to provide motion capture for Uncharted 4, which she noted she was “still shocked to this day that it happened this way.”

The Last of Us is currently available for streaming on HBO Max.
