Although there are many to choose from, a firm favorite aspect of The Walking Dead from fans across its 11 seasons on AMC was how incredibly the series fleshed out its characters, who not only fused its post-apocalyptic story with hyperrealistic emotion and despair but also became a part of viewers’ Sunday night routine. So many scenes from the long-running show are a true masterclass in tension-building, especially those offering pretty gruesome discoveries like the birth of Judith or Carl getting a bullet to the eye. However, among all the shocking scenes that could be picked, one in particular has stuck in a lot of fans’ minds as being its “most messed up”, and it doesn’t even include any of the cast.

For many, The Walking Dead was peak Sunday night television viewing, drawing millions of viewers to their sofas in a bid to find out who lived or died in the show’s next nail-biting episode. However, by season 6, watchers were finding other things to do with their Sunday nights as numbers started to decline, with a noticeable slide around the time of the Season 7 premiere in 2016. For those who have watched that particular season premiere, it doesn’t take a lot to work out that Glenn’s horrific death at the hands of Negan was majorly responsible for some fans switching over the channel. One thing that the series has always been brilliant at and that’s its ability to shock its viewers, but one scene involving a car trunk might have pushed some watchers over the edge.

The Walking Dead Fans Think the Zombie in the Trunk Is the Show’s ‘Most Messed Up’ Scene

Over on Reddit, a Walking Dead fan has revealed what they think is the show’s most disturbing scene, and it’s one that some fans may not have thought of. According to user RevertBackwards, the scene where Maggie comes across a tied-up walker in the trunk of a car is, by far, its most “messed up” due to believing that the woman was placed there while she was still alive, eventually turning as she died from starvation and a lack of oxygen. This particular scene is from The Walking Dead, season 4, episode 10, “Them”, which has plenty of horrible scenes, like the group resorting to eating dog meat and a grieving Daryl self-harming. The group finds several abandoned cars as they scavenge for food, but in one of the trunks, Maggie finds a tied-up female walker. Seeing the woman shocks Maggie as she is still grieving for her sister, Beth, and the walker bears a somewhat of a resemblance to her. Glenn kills it for her and later urges Maggie to keep fighting to live.

“Imagine the horror she felt before dying,” said one fan of the show in the comment section. “Maggie’s visceral response when she realizes that she’s left that broken remnant trapped in the unending darkness, just as it was in its final terrified moments,” replied another commenter. However, some other replies seem to think that the woman could have been a walker before being tied up, and her family was hopeful of a cure at the time, but, like many people, they could have ended up being walker food, so the poor woman had been left in the car ever since.

Some other examples of the worst scenes in The Walking Dead that are a fan-favorite include the Governor beheading Hershel, the death of Glenn and the line of ten severed heads on pikes made up of Ozzy, Alek, D.J., Frankie, Tammy Rose, Rodney, Addy, Enid, Tara, and Henry, meant to signify Alpha’s territorial boundary. The Walking Dead quickly gained a reputation for its upsetting stunts that left its loyal fanbase truly shaken and, at times, very disturbed. Whether it was killing off loved characters or showcasing the bloodiest of scenes, The Walking Dead never failed to keep viewers on their toes throughout the show’s eleven seasons.
