In Crimson Desert, the path to power isn’t always paved with hard-earned Abyss Artifacts. A core mechanic often overlooked by new players is the “Observe & Learn” system, which allows Kliff to acquire powerful abilities simply by watching NPCs, bosses, and environmental apparitions perform them. Mastering this system is essential for any player looking to optimize their character build without burning through limited resources.

The “Observe & Learn” Basics

The mechanic is simple: when an opponent or NPC performs a specific move, a prompt will appear on your screen. Holding the observe button allows you to “learn” that skill instantly. This not only saves precious Abyss Artifacts but often grants access to mid-to-late-game skills much earlier than the questline would normally allow.

Early Game Essentials (Chapter 1–3)

Many of Kliff’s most versatile moves can be learned within the first few hours of the game:

Keen Senses Counter, Spinning Slashes, & Forward Slash Proficiency: All three can be learned at the training area in Hernand. Simply observe the soldiers practicing these moves to add them to your kit.

Charged Shot: Learnable from the archer in the central area of the settlement. Note: If a bug prevents the NPC from shooting, this skill can also be learned from an NPC at your camp on Howling Hill (requires Level 3 Camp).

Unarmed Combat Proficiency: Head to the communal training grounds south of the town and observe the children practicing.

Double Jump: Visit Perorin Village (unlocked by completing the Shai questline) and observe the children jumping in the village square.

Vault: Observe the dual-dagger-wielding Fundamentalist Goblins near Reedfield Graves.

Main Quest & Boss-Specific Skills

Several high-tier abilities are locked behind main story encounters, requiring timing and focus:

Force Palm & Nature’s Grasp: Automatically unlocked during the “Abyss Without Balance” and “Reunion” main quests.

Pumpkick: Observe Knight Matias during the “For Honor” quest. Be careful not to defeat him too quickly; allow the fight to progress so you have time to observe the move.

Evasive Roll: Watch the “Hornsplitter” during the final quest of Chapter 2.

Swift Stab: Learnable from the “Reed Devil” during the “Dance with the Devil” quest.

Turning Slash: Acquired during the “Lord Amidst the Ruins” questline by observing Saig, the Staglord.

Aerial Roll: Watch the Crowaller during your second encounter at the cemetery in Chapter 5.

Mid-to-Late Game Powerhouses (Chapter 4–9)

These skills are found deeper in the game and often require specific quest progression:

Focused Force Palm: Found near the stone archway while traveling to the Scholar Stone Institute (Chapter 4).

Multi-Shot: Learnable from archer-type bandits at Blood Steel Camp (as early as Chapter 2) or via the commander at Fort Warp Spike.

Wyvern Flame: Learnable from Baltazar at Wyvern’s Cradle (Three Brothers Cliff). Warning: High-level encounter; bring health potions.

Body Slam: Learnable by fighting Sir Catfish in Valor (requires completion of the “Beyond the Silent Waves” faction quest).

Focused Repulsion: Learnable during the “Black Witch” quest from Hexomarie in Chapter 9.

Meteor Kick: Acquired from Goyan during the “Unwavering Steps” quest (Chapter 9).

Blinding Flash Finisher: Learnable from Master Doo during the “Sage of the Desert” quest (Chapter 9).

Strategic Utility

Nature’s Sneer: Solve the ancient puzzle near Haunted Hill to learn this environmental skill.

Clothesline: Observe the black bears located west of Hernand in the mountain towers.

Dropkick: Learnable from staff-wielding NPCs at the White Deer Ridge cabin.

Conclusion

By utilizing the “Observe & Learn” system, players can curate a powerful, diverse move set for Kliff without ever spending an Abyss Artifact. This approach not only keeps your resources available for gear refinement but also encourages deep exploration of Pywel’s many hidden NPCs and combat challenges.
