Assassin’s Creed Shadows wowed fans with its dual protagonists and return to stealth roots—but what if a co-op mode was added?

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is something of a redemption story for Ubisoft. With its success, the studio reminded fans that it still has some creative fire left. But now that the game has proven itself, the question becomes: How can it be made even better?
The answer could lie in co-op. It’s an opportunity Ubisoft has not talked about yet, but one fans have been eager to see become reality, especially after experiencing the fantastic co-op campaign of Ghost of Tsushima: Legend.
With two distinct playable characters already built into the story, Shadows can strike while the iron’s hot.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows has room to grow- Will Ubisoft follow through?

When Ghost of Tsushima: Legends dropped as a free post-launch expansion, it stunned everyone. What was originally a tightly woven single-player experience suddenly had a new dimension. It allowed players to take on missions together, blending it into a beautiful mix of coordination and chaos.
This is where Assassin’s Creed Shadows could take inspiration. The structure is already halfway there. With Yasuke and Naoe offering two drastically different playstyles: brute force versus stealth, samurai versus shinobi, it’s hard not to imagine how compelling it would be to take on missions together.
Think about it for a second: one player distracting guards in a full-on brawl while the other scales rooftops and eliminates archers or distracted targets in silence. Or coordinated stealth takedowns, tag-team escapes, and dynamic choices that play off each other.
The dual-protagonist setup practically begs for a co-op mode that blends strategy with freedom, giving players even more ways to explore feudal Japan. Players also understand this, and they are already talking about it.
The comparisons to Ghost of Tsushima were inevitable the moment Shadows was announced. And now that the game has proven itself, adding co-op, another fuel to the fire, could be the next feature that gets players buzzing again.
And with Shadows‘ story naturally alternating between Yasuke and Naoe, it’s not far-fetched to imagine a campaign that adapts to two players instead of one.
Co-op remains a rumor, with Ubisoft keeping quiet

As exciting as the idea of a co-op mode in Assassin’s Creed Shadows is, it’s important to remember that, for now, it remains just that: a rumor. Yeah, sure, there has been some rumor (notably via InsiderGaming) about a co-op mode being in development.
However, Ubisoft has not confirmed anything. With the multiple delays and reported internal changes, there’s no solid evidence that a co-op mode is officially planned.
Right now, players are waiting for the Claws of Awaji expansion and hoping that post-launch support brings even more features. But when it comes to co-op? Silence.
That silence is deafening, but it could mean a few things. Ubisoft may be keeping plans under wraps, waiting to announce a surprise feature later on. Or maybe, co-op simply isn’t part of the vision for Shadows, and the studio is choosing to double down on the single-player experience instead.
Whatever the case may be, it’s clear that Ubisoft is carefully navigating how it evolves the series without losing what fans loved in the first place.
For now, fans can only wait and see what the developer has planned for the future. But one thing’s clear: Assassin’s Creed Shadows has laid a good groundwork for something even greater.
