Assassin’s Creed Shadows focuses heavily on environmental realism. But with so much attention on graphics, does the gameplay still deliver?

In recent years, the gaming industry has been increasingly obsessed with pushing the boundaries of graphic fidelity. Assassin’s Creed Shadows, set to release on March 20th, seems to be following the same trend, with a massive focus on environmental dynamism and realism.

However, while the game has been delayed multiple times, allowing Ubisoft to focus on gameplay and polish, it remains to be seen whether all this graphical attention will come at the expense of the core gameplay experience.

At the heart of Assassin’s Creed Shadows is Ubisoft’s Anvil engine, a piece of technology that has been the backbone of the studio’s games for years. In an interview with GamesBeat, Pierre Fortin, a technical architect at Ubisoft, shared some valuable technical insights into the game.
Fortin discussed how Anvil has continuously evolved, allowing the team to push the boundaries of what’s possible in game design. This flexibility allows the implementation of new complex dynamic systems such as crowd simulations, changing weather, and real-time environmental effects like seasons.
When discussing crowd simulations and environment specifically, Fortin emphasized how crucial this element is for the Assassin’s Creed experience. He said:
For Assassin’s Creed, we want to have the most credible environments. We spend a good chunk of our GPU budget there.
This statement shows that developers wanted to make the world of the game feel more alive and responsive. He added that the game’s focus is on realism and dynamism, from how vegetation moves to how characters react to the environment, like wind and seasons.
While the attention to the environment is impressive, the developers must not forget that gameplay is king. If this king is missing, everything else will just be nothing. So hopefully, with the two delays, the gameplay has leveled up and is on par, if not better than graphical fidelity.
Gameplay must take precedence over graphics

While high fidelity is a major draw for modern games (who doesn’t love seeing dynamic weather affecting the environment?), gameplay remains the most crucial aspect of any title.
Assassin’s Creed games have long been known for their engaging mechanics, from fluid parkour to stealthy combat, and Shadows needs to uphold that legacy. Let’s be clear: the gameplay shown (after delays) so far in Shadows does indicate improvements.
However, these updates have only come after significant backlash from previous showcases of the gameplay. The delays have given the developers the time to refine the game, respond to criticisms, and add new features.
Still, Shadows has a lot to prove, especially considering the studio’s rocky track record recently and all the controversies it has faced. While crowd simulations and dynamic environments add depth to the experience, they cannot replace the tight mechanics that have long been the hallmark of the series.
In the end, if Ubisoft manages to balance the stunning visuals with solid gameplay mechanics, Shadows could set a new benchmark for open-world games (especially with the new RPG mechanics shown).
Only time will tell if this risky approach pays off or if Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be remembered as another visually stunning but ultimately shallow experience.
Will Shadows deliver engaging gameplay, or will it fall victim to the trap of prioritizing aesthetics over substance? Share your thoughts with us in the comment section below.
