Avowed and Skyrim might be loosely related to one another but both games are quite fundamentally different in nature.
Obsidian’s latest release, Avowed, is being compared to Bethesda’s Skyrim due to their similar genres; however, both of these games have very little in common, and they are not as similar as they might appear upon a first glance.

Obsidian had designed Fallout: New Vegas using Bethesda’s game engine, and this is the biggest reason why similarities between its games are being drawn with Skyrim. But these two games are quite different and do not share a lot of things in common.

Apart from the fact that Obsidian did use Bethesda’s engine to develop Fallout: New Vegas, a game that was quite different from what the developer is usually known for, Avowed vaguely shares a similar feel to Bethesda’s Skyrim.
However, where Avowed is a first-person dragon age RPG, it does not offer the same level of freedom to players like Skyrim’s open world; the areas in Avowed are only semi-open worlds, and there is very little space for exploration beyond the main story and side quests. The game is designed for completion, not exploration.
Despite the vague similarity between the two studios, their fundamentals about game design are quite different. The reason why Fallout: New Vegas was created as an open world was largely because of Bethesda’s involvement and also because Obsidian had to take into account what the Fallout games stand for.
Even players are not satisfied with the comparisons being drawn between the two games, as they know there is no way these games can be compared. They exist in two totally different places and should be left their as they are.
Avowed’s semi-linear style distinguishes itself from Skyrim

Skyrim is known for its attention to detail and a very expansive open world that offers players the freedom to explore and approach the game in their unique way. Both of these games have unique approaches to storytelling.
It offers a highly customizable experience, whereas Avowed might hold your hand and guide you through the map, taking you to all the important checkpoints. while saving you from danger through signs and warnings.
Obsidian’s approach has always been like this; it focuses more on the narrative than expansion. Most of its games do not comprise an extensive open world, and players should not expect an experience like Skyrim while playing Avowed since they are fundamentally different.
