David Goldfarb, Battlefield 3’s lead designer recently had some nostalgic details to share about the game. It seems there were two cut missions!

More than a decade after its release, Battlefield 3 is one of the best games in the First Person Shooter genre. Released in 2011, the game was a genre-defining title at the time in terms of its graphics, features, and gameplay. And even with its issues, it remains a fan-favorite.

Recently, David Goldfarb, the game’s lead designer, shared some nostalgic insights on X (formerly Twitter) regarding its development. His words have given us a great deal of context regarding the development process but have also reminded us why Battlefield 3 remains a classic to this day.

In a series of nostalgic tweets on January 6, 2025, Goldfarb said that two missions focusing on the character Hawkins were cut during the development of Battlefield 3.The first involved Hawkins, a jet pilot introduced in the mission “Going Hunting.”

In this cut content, Hawkins would have been shot down, captured, and tasked with a daring escape. The second mission involved a rendezvous between Hawkins and Dima, a fan-favorite Russian operative.

Released in 2011, Battlefield 3‘s cutting-edge Frostbite 2 engine featured breathtaking visuals and massive multiplayer battles. It captured the essence of modern warfare on a scale rarely seen before. The game’s multiplayer mode, with its team-oriented gameplay, diverse maps, and vehicles, set a benchmark for the genre.

The rivalry between Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 defined 2011’s FPS scene. Both games offered vastly different experiences. The best part of Modern Warfare 3 was its fast-paced, arcade-style gameplay and cinematic campaign. The multiplayer featured smaller maps that appealed to fans of quick, high-speed matches.

In comparison, Battlefield 3 was more focused on team-based strategies, large-scale battles, and vehicle combat. Fans often chose between the two based on their preferences: Call of Duty for quick, intense matches, or Battlefield for large-scale, tactical warfare.

The Battlefield franchise needs to find its footing in the coming fture

In terms of single-player campaigns, Modern Warfare 3 leaned heavily on bombastic set pieces and a tightly woven narrative. Meanwhile, Battlefield 3 opted for a more grounded, militaristic approach. However, as Goldfarb’s revelations suggest, the Battlefield campaign might have benefitted from the inclusion of the cut missions, which could have added variety and depth to the storytelling.

Goldfarb’s nostalgic musings are a good reminder about the role of single-player campaigns in Battlefield games. It’s been sad to see the franchise’s more recent focus on multiplayer, especially following Battlefield 2042, which lacked a campaign altogether. Let’s hope for the next entries to return to franchise roots.

Fourteen years later, Battlefield 3 continues to hold a special place in the hearts of gamers. Its blend of technical innovation, ambitious design, and memorable multiplayer moments will forever be remembered by gamers. The recent comments from the creator have only reminded us of the passion and effort behind its creation.
