Black Mirror is back with season seven, and it seems like everyone has missed the entire point of the fifth episode, Eulogy.

It’s about a man who uses an innovative new system to step back into photographic memories of the past after his old lover dies, leading him to re-examine a heartbreaking period in his life.

Philip can’t remember what his ex-girlfriend Carol looks like as he’s cut her face out of all the pictures he has of her, and he’s desperately trying to remember her appearance.

However, people have realised the real reason he can’t remember her face, and it has nothing to do with the photos. It’s because Philip never truly *saw* Carol at all during their relationship.

Think about it. When he steps back into the first photograph, the Guide points out the engagement ring on her finger, and Philip says he never noticed that she was engaged.

Later on, we find out that the man never thought about how Carol would feel in certain situations, like when she had to play the keyboard in the band instead of the cello.

He also didn’t consider her feelings on Halloween night when the guy was trying to flirt with her, not noticing that she felt uncomfortable and didn’t really want to be there.

On the night of the proposal, Philip didn’t see the letter that she left for him either, because he was so consumed by his own feelings at that moment.

In every situation, he spins the story to make her seem like the villain and him the victim, and he’s catered his entire memory of the relationship to follow that same view.

However, in reality, Philip never truly tried to see Carol, connect with her, or understand her fully. He is very self-centered, and that’s why he can’t remember what she looks like.

By the end, he has been forced to see things from her perspective and connect with her on a deeper level, which is why he can finally see her face.

A TikTok user called Christina made a video about the true meaning of the episode, and everyone is agreeing in the comments.

“YES I AGREE! That’s why it wasn’t as impactful for me cause he didn’t seem to be a great boyfriend? Like honestly I feel she was probably better off without him,” one person wrote.
