The Team Behind Witcher 3’s Rumored Upcoming DLC Made One Of 2024’s Coolest RPGs

It may seem hard to believe that after over a decade, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt would be getting more DLC, yet that is exactly what the rumors are stating. Despite it seeming like CD Projekt Red had moved on, greenlighting numerous spin-offs over at Netflix as well as announcing a Witcher remake and the upcoming sequel starring Ciri in the lead role, it is apparently not done with its swansong video game. Of course, who can blame it when The Witcher 3 is still regarded as one of the greatest games of all time?

Naturally, these rumors should be taken with a pinch of salt. However, considering The Witcher 3 is still one of the best RPGs ever made, it isn’t surprising that CD Projekt Red may return to it and give dedicated fans who have beaten its already generous main campaign and two huge DLCs multiple times a little extra treat. What is most exciting about this rumor and alleged DLC is who is behind it, as it looks like CD Projekt Red is taking a backseat this time and giving a phenomenal RPG developer a shot at The Witcher.

Witcher 3 Might Get New Story DLC From Fool’s Theory

According To Fresh New Rumors

I certainly didn’t have it on my 2025 bingo card that The Witcher 3, a game that released all the way back in 2015, would be getting more story DLC, but, according to Polish podcasters, Rock and Borys, that’s exactly what is happening. Uploaded to the YouTube channel, Remigiusz Maciaszek, Remigiusz and Borys discussed the many upcoming Witcher projects, including the hype-inducing upcoming Witcher 4, and the aforementioned DLC for The Witcher 3. Of course, it is based on an undisclosed source, so it’s important to take it all with a healthy pinch of salt.

Remigiusz and Borys explained – as translated by YouTube’s auto-translation – that the “mysterious project by CD Projekt Red […] is a story DLC for The Witcher 3.” They then go on to explain that “this is confirmed information from several independent sources,” although they obviously don’t explain who. It all sounds relatively promising, and not exactly out of the realm of possibility. Cyberpunk 2077 continues to get updates several years later, and there is even another huge update coming to Cyberpunk this year. There’s nothing stopping CD Projekt Red from giving The Witcher 3 the same love.

Interestingly, Remigiusz and Borys further explain that this DLC likely won’t release this year, but, according to a source, will, at the earliest, release “next year at the earliest,” so, 2026. To back this up, they outline what they believe to be the order of upcoming Witcher-related gaming content, with the first thing to be released being mods for consoles, then the aforementioned Witcher 3 DLC, then The Witcher 4, and finally the upcoming Witcher 1 remake. You can read the full quote below:

“Let’s move on to our main topic. From the information we have collected, it turns out that the announced, mysterious project by CD Projekt Red, made by Fool’s Theory, is a story DLC for The Witcher 3. This is confirmed information from several independent sources. […] What we know is that this is a DLC for The Witcher 3. I found one piece of information, I can’t confirm it any further, that it’s next year at the earliest. We also more or less know the order of the releases: first, mods for consoles, then the DLC for The Witcher 3, then The Witcher 4, and finally, the remake of The Witcher 1.”

It is hard to gauge just how big this rumored DLC will be for The Witcher 3. After all, one could consider The Witcher 3’s Netflix crossover mission a piece of story-based DLC. It could be that this story DLC is just a handful of new quests to give players some fun new content to engage with, as opposed to a Blood and Wine-sized expansion. However, based on who CD Projekt Red has allegedly tasked with developing this DLC, I would be surprised if it wasn’t at least moderately substantial in scope and scale.

Rumored Witcher 3 DLC Studio Made The Thaumaturge

It Is One Of 2024’s Best RPGs

According to Remigiusz and Borys, the rumored Witcher 3 story DLC is being developed by Fool’s Theory, a smaller Polish developer best known for its critically acclaimed RPG, The Thaumaturge. While announcing the Witcher 3 DLC rumors, Remigiusz and Borys explained that it would be “made by Fool’s Theory,” which absolutely makes sense. With the most recent Cyberpunk 2077 update, CD Projekt Red outsourced it to Virtuos, the folks supporting the development of the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater.

It isn’t uncommon for support developers to assist with the production of additional content, especially for games that have long since stopped main production, like The Witcher 3. Fool’s Theory is an excellent choice, as its RPG, The Thaumaturge, which was released back in 2024, was praised primarily for its excellent writing and characters. While its style of combat differs from The Witcher 3’swhat is most important is that new story content for CD Projekt Red’s seminal RPG matches the quality of writing fans have come to expect.

Fool’s Theory can undeniably deliver that, and its Polish roots will also likely help them delve deeper into the country’s folklore that so heavily inspired the books and thus the video game adaptation. Of course, it also helps that CD Projekt Red already has a working relationship with Fool’s Theory and thus a lot of confidence in it as a developer. Their current working relationship also gives credence to the idea that it has been tasked to develop additional story content for The Witcher 3, especially as it’s already immersed within that world with its other project.

CDPR Seems To Have A Lot Of Confidence In Fool’s Theory

It Is Developing The Witcher Remake

Fool’s Theory is currently developing the aforementioned Witcher 1 remake for CD Projekt Red. According to its official website, it began development on the remake all the way back in 2022, before The Thaumaturge was even released. It had, prior to that, released another RPG titled Seven: The Days Long Gone, which was similarly critically acclaimed, although it largely flew under the radar. CD Projekt Red clearly saw something in Fool’s Theory all the way back then to entrust it with the development of the remake.

It makes sense then that it would also trust it to develop more content for The Witcher 3, especially after its critical success with The ThaumaturgeThat confidence in Fool’s Theory is obviously not unfounded, and it is definitely a good choice for the task, especially thanks to both it and CD Projekt Red working in the same narrative-heavy RPG space. Of course, it remains to be seen whether Fool’s Theory manages to pull it off, but I, for one, especially after having beaten The Thaumaturge, have complete confidence in it to deliver an incredible story DLC.

That is, of course, if it is indeed real. One would hope that it is, especially as The Witcher 3 still holds up today as one of gaming’s best open-world RPGs. There is room for more stories and quests for Geralt to embark on, especially after the phenomenal Blood and Wine and Hearts of Stone showed us what that could look like. While it is always important to take any rumors, no matter how tantalizing they sound, with a pinch of salt, I can’t help but hope that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt does indeed get more story content.
