American Primeval fans have been told to watch a ‘gripping’ drama series that has been dubbed as a combination of ‘True Detective meets American Beauty’.
The western epic series from Netflix is still one of the most watched titles on the service despite being added more than a month ago. At the time of writing it sits third in the UK top ten, only bumped from top spot by Missing You and recently released The Night Agent season two.
For those who have yet to binge all six episodes, the series is based in 1857 America and is a fictionalised dramatisation and examination of the violent collision of culture, religion, and community as men and women fight and die to keep or control the land.

As many Netflix subscribers might now be disappointed if they have already binged the show, they are now being advised to watch a drama series from 2022 that may have passed them by. While it is not available on the same streamer, it can be viewed on Disney+ with a subscription or for free in the UK on ITVX.
Under the Banner of Heaven follows Detective Jeb Pyre. played by Andrew Garfield, as he investigates the grisly murder of a woman and her baby daughter in a suburb in the Salt Lake Valley. He uncovers buried truths about the origins of the Latter Day Saints (LDS) religion and the violent consequences of unyielding faith.
Website Collider compiled their own top 10 list of films and series fans of American Primeval should watch next, with Under the Banner of Heaven coming in at number five. While the mini-series is actually set primarily in the 1980s and is based on a book written about a shocking real life murder case, there is perhaps an unexpected crossover with the popular Netflix show.
Without giving too much away about the plot of the series, as the investigation unfolds, there are flashbacks to the early days of the church and key figures involved in its founding. This means that the time period switches to one that crosses over with American Primeval. Both shows also reflect on Mormon communities during the early days of the American West.

Viewers who have already seen the true crime series are full of praise, meaning it should be worth a watch in its own right.
One described it online as “True Detective meets American Beauty in an LDS community.” They added: “Brilliant story, outstanding performances and attention to detail that is second to none. I knew nothing of the LDS faith and feel it was a wonderfully told story done with grace and intrigue, drawing you in revealing the woven storylines each episode leaving you wanting to know more.”
Another added: “This show is written in an amazing and captivating way, I found myself looking at the screen and I couldn’t take my eyes of the show until I was done. The acting is amazing by all the actors specially Andrew Garfield. Overall really great show and acting, perfectly written and for sure its Emmy nominations were completely valid.”
