It seems just like Dragon Age: The VeilguardAge of Empires 3: Definitive Edition is also ending its journey. The former was released in October 2024 by BioWare. After becoming the most successful single-player game of EA, Veilguard received its final major update a few days ago.

As things stand, Word’s Edge has taken the same stance for Age of Empires 3: Definitive Edition. Despite promising fans with a DLC almost a year ago, not only we are exempted from that expansion, but we might not get any more significant future updates as well.

Developers finally cancel the already announced DLC for Age of Empires 3: Definitive Edition

Although the Age of Empires franchise has seen many triumphs and some ambitious plans, the forthcoming DLC for Age of Empires 3: Definitive Edition has been plagued by a cloud.

The DLC, which was originally scheduled for release in late 2024 and was announced nearly a year ago, was postponed to an ambiguous “future date.” The DLC has now been fully canceled, according to a recent announcement on Steam.

Although there have been very few official announcements regarding this DLC, we do know that it will introduce two new civilizations to Age of Empires 3. These would come from Denmark and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, according to a teaser from the developer stream where the DLC was first made public.

This would have increased the number of civilizations in the Definitive Edition to 24. But in October 2024, this thrilling addition to the strategy game was postponed.

The last part of the announcement sounds kind of intriguing. The Age of Empires team stated that as it is not moving forward with the DLC content, it will “continue to maintain servers, rotate civs through the free trial version, and provide Customer Support for any issues you may encounter while playing.”

Reading the conclusion of the announcement, players might wonder if the developers have put an end to any future significant updates to the game as well.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard has received its final major update

It appears that BioWare has bid farewell to any further Dragon Age updates with the release of Patch 5 the previous week. In addition to a few minor quality-of-life improvements, the update’s patch notes thank players for their support of Dragon Age: The Veilguard over the past few months.

BioWare adds that it is now relieved that the game is in a “stable place” and that it will move to monitoring in the event that any complaints of game-breaking issues are received. “Dareth shiral!”—which means “goodbye” or “safe travel” in the Elvish language of the game—signs off the patch notes. This sounds like the one.

With Dragon Age: The Veilguard “engaging” 1.5 million players from October 2024 to the end of the year, “down nearly 50 percent from the company’s expectations,” EA said earlier this week that the game had failed to meet the publisher’s internal targets. Although major updates to Dragon Age: The Veilguard were not expected and BioWare had already ruled out the possibility of DLC, fans have responded in shock to the sudden termination of any further minor enhancements.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard‘s farewell was quite understandable as BioWare wanted to focus on Mass Effect 5. But the abrupt termination of Age of Empire 3: Definitive Edition is still a mystery.
