A gripping new teaser trailer focused on the X-Men has taken over theaters β and the internet β giving Marvel fans their first haunting look at Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen reprising Professor X and Magneto in the upcoming blockbuster Avengers: Doomsday.
The third in a series of character-specific teasers playing exclusively before screenings of Disney’s Avatar: Fire and Ash, this one shifts the spotlight to the mutants. Bootleg recordings flooded social media almost immediately after its debut last week, racking up millions of views and sparking heated debates about what Doctor Doom has in store for the iconic team.
The roughly 90-second spot opens with somber shots gliding through the dimly lit, battle-scarred halls of Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. Ian McKellen’s Magneto provides the chilling voiceover: “Death comes for us all, that’s all I know for sure. The question isnβt are you prepared to die? The question is who will you be when you close your eyes?”
Viewers then see a chessboard with a piece levitating β a nod to the classic rivalry β as Professor X (Stewart), seated in his familiar yellow hoverchair from the original Fox films, reaches across to grasp Magneto’s hand in a rare moment of solidarity. The tone darkens quickly: Cut to James Marsden’s Cyclops, visor off, unleashing a massive optic blast amid the flaming ruins of the X-Mansion, with glimpses of massive Sentinel legs in the background.
It closes with the ominous Doomsday countdown clock and bold text: “The X-Men Will Return in Avengers: Doomsday.”
Marvel Studios has yet to release this teaser officially online, following the pattern set by the previous two: The Steve Rogers-focused spot dropped digitally shortly after leaking, followed by the Thor teaser going public just as this X-Men one arrived in cinemas. Insiders suggest the X-Men teaser could hit Marvel’s YouTube channel as early as next week, with a fourth teaser β rumored to highlight Wakanda or the Fantastic Four β slated for January 8.
Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Avengers: Doomsday arrives December 18, 2026, as the massive crossover event uniting Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, the Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts crew, Wakandans, and legacy X-Men against Robert Downey Jr.’s Victor von Doom. The pivot to Doom came after scrapping Kang plans following Jonathan Majors’ departure, with Downey’s casting announced to thunderous applause at San Diego Comic-Con 2024.
The returning Fox-era mutants include Stewart as Charles Xavier, McKellen as Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto, Marsden as Scott Summers/Cyclops, Kelsey Grammer as Hank McCoy/Beast, Alan Cumming as Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn as Raven DarkhΓΆlme/Mystique, and Channing Tatum as Remy LeBeau/Gambit. They’re joined by a sprawling MCU ensemble: Chris Evans back as Steve Rogers, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Captain America, and dozens more.
Fans have long clamored for comic-accurate treatment of the X-Men on screen, and early reactions praise this teaser for delivering: Cyclops finally in a vibrant, ’90s-inspired suit with the signature yellow accents, Professor X in a more tactical outfit reminiscent of his comic militaristic phases, and that emotional Professor-Magneto dynamic echoing their best moments from the 2000s films.
Online buzz exploded post-leak. “Cyclops screaming with the mansion on fire? Sentinel hints? This is the justice we’ve waited 20 years for,” one top Reddit comment read on r/MarvelStudios. Others noted the darker tone: “Doom using Sentinels to decimate the mutants before the Avengers even show up? Stakes feel real again.”
The strategy of weekly theatrical-exclusive teasers has driven repeat viewings for Avatar: Fire and Ash, with reports of sold-out screenings fueled by Marvel hunters. Previous spots teased Evans’ Rogers pulled from retirement (complete with a baby, hinting at his Endgame alternate timeline life) and Hemsworth’s Thor invoking Odin for one last fight.
Plot details remain tightly guarded, but leaks and set reports point to multiversal incursions, Doom kidnapping Franklin Richards (from a post-credits stinger in The Fantastic Four: First Steps), and potentially weaponizing Sentinels against mutants β forcing uneasy alliances across hero factions.
McKellen, 85, and Stewart, 85, haven’t shared the screen as these characters since 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past. Stewart briefly reprised Professor X in 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (where he met a grim fate), while McKellen has stayed away until now. Marsden’s Cyclops, infamously underdeveloped and killed off early in the old trilogy, gets particular fan love here β “Finally his time,” trending on X.
Composer Alan Silvestri returns after Infinity War and Endgame, promising that epic orchestral swell fans crave. Principal photography wrapped last fall, with reshoots underway into early 2026.
As the MCU builds toward this and 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars, the hype train is full steam. Box office prognosticators already peg Doomsday as 2026’s biggest earner, battling heavyweights like Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Disney’s live-action Moana remake.
Whether this teaser signals a triumphant mutant integration or a tragic swan song for the Fox era remains to be seen. One thing’s certain: After years of post-Endgame stumbles, Marvel’s playing its legacy cards big β and fans are eating it up.
