With no major updates for over six years, The Elder Scrolls 6 is starting to feel a bit like a fever dream but according to recent comments by Todd Howard, there could be a reason for that.

First announced back in 2018 alongside a very brief teaser trailer, The Elder Scrolls 6 is an upcoming Bethesda title which just so happens to be the long-awaited sequel to the modern-day classic The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

As a result, fans are eager for it to be released. However, with updates scarce and no footage since its teaser trailer, its whole existence is starting to feel like an urban myth.

However, after Bethesda’s Todd Howard claimed that the studio plans to regularly update TES VI with yearly DLCs, fans are starting to believe that the game’s scope could be the reason for its apparent delay.

This was recently discussed over on r/TESVI with one user saying:

“When I first started speculating about the TES VI sometime around 2014, the consensus on the old Bethesda forums was that a multi-province game was not ideal, as that would mean less time and resources was dedicated to fleshing out the unique cultures of each province…

However, with Todd Howard’s comments about wanting to support TES VI with yearly DLCs, something akin to a multi-province game could actually work.”

The user goes on to suggest examples, ranging from the game centering on Hammerfell with DLCs spreading out to neighbouring regions or even adding a sailing mechanic so that players can explore different provinces a whole lot easier.

However, it seems as though fellow fans felt torn over this idea.

“Multi-province would be possible but I don’t think it would be better than one province with more detail,” user jterwin admitted.

Ojkingbosslife added, “they could straight up make the game exactly how Skyrim was and just being set in Hammerfell, that is my minimum for the game.”

However, with others claiming that they would be happy to buy annual DLCs if that meant that they got to explore more locations, it seems as though either option could work.

For now, let us just focus on getting The Elder Scrolls 6 released.
