This is quite easily the most baffling story I’ve encountered all week.
Warner Bros. has cancelled a planned paid DLC for Hogwarts Legacy as well as an unannounced definitive edition.
For months now, insiders have been teasing the definitive edition, with Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier explaining that Rocksteady had been drafted in to help following the disastrous launch of Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League.
It’s exactly what the game needed; fans have been crying out for post-launch content.
The project was yet to be officially unveiled though and I have to admit, I’ve been wondering for some time what the hold up is.
Well, Schreier has revealed in a new report that the director’s cut has seemingly been cancelled along with a paid DLC that was also in the works.
Both releases were planned to launch this year, with the expansion reportedly adding several new storylines.
According to Schreier, the project was cancelled “in part due to concerns that the amount of content was not substantial enough to justify the price being considered”.
You’d have thought that might’ve been a point to consider in pre-production.
Warner Bros. Games recently went on record to say that it would be focusing on its tentpole franchises going forwards: Harry Potter, DC, Game of Thrones, and Mortal Kombat.
And yet since, it’s cancelled Wonder Woman, a DC game, and Hogwarts Legacy DLC, a Harry Potter game.
And let’s not forget that Hogwarts Legacy was the biggest-selling new release of 2023.
I find it hard to believe that paid DLC would be anything other than a financial success.
Needless to say, fans are gutted.
“I don’t understand why they’re not pouring more money into this. It’s an obvious success, they should be churning out HP content left and right. It’s like they hate money,” wrote Reddit user Ganda1fderBlaue.
“WB studios knows how to lose money. It’s honestly amazing,” added another user.
“I don’t get this at all, this was their most successful game in ages, people would obviously pay for an expansion even if it wasn’t very large,” said MrHappy230.
