Matthew McConaughey & Woody Harrelson have surprisingly reprised their True Detective roles, Rust and Marty, in 2025, further reinstating that the HBO show’s season 5 is better off without them. Although True Detective has had four seasons so far, each featuring a talented roster of actors, its first season is often considered its finest, and rightfully so. The most recent installment of the series, starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as its lead, earned immense acclaim from many critics. However, it still failed to live up to the raw intensity and cultural impact of season 1.

While True Detective season 1 had a lot going in its favor, one of the primary reasons it succeeded was Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson’s portrayal of their respective characters, Rust and Marty. Owing to this, viewers cannot help but hope the two characters will return to the series in a future installment. The Advert Proves Their Return Would Feel Forced

McConaughey and Harrelson revisited their True Detective characters in a new True to Texas ad. Although they do not address each other as Marty and Rust in the advert, they pick their respective character’s mannerisms as they drive around while creating a humorous homage to their iconic roles. Since it is an advert, it heavily relies on drawing references to their True Detective characters, prompting viewers to not take their shtick too seriously and rather focus on the message behind their act.

However, a close look at the ad makes it hard not to believe that even their True Detective return would be no different. Their initial run as Rust and Marty in True Detective season 1 was memorable because viewers were not used to seeing deeply flawed and “bad” men like them as the heroes of a crime drama. McConaughey’s Rust also had an air of enigma and ambiguity that drew audiences towards him. The advert shows that if the two stars were to return as their True Detective characters, they would probably be reduced to classic dialogue, nostalgia, and callbacks, making them nothing like their season 1 counterparts.

True Detective season 4 tried to riff on season 1’s success by dropping many nods to Rust and Cohle’s quotes and investigation. However, these references fell flat because they felt forced and did not serve the season’s overarching story in any way. Callbacks to Rust and Cohle also did not fit too well into True Detective season 4’s story because season 1 had already given them and their narrative a well-rounded conclusion. Owing to this, it would not make a lot of sense for another season to bring them back in any capacity.

Marking their return in another True Detective installment would mean dragging them back to a darker, unresolved place that would undermine the sense of growth and closure they experience in season 1’s ending moments.

Before True Detective season 1’s end credits start rolling, the show gives viewers a heartwarming moment where Rust and Cohle not only end up burying their beef but Rust also finds a glimmer of hope and starts believing that “the light’s winning.” Marking their return in another True Detective installment would mean dragging them back to a darker, unresolved place that would undermine the sense of growth and closure they experience in season 1’s ending moments. Therefore, instead of ruining their season 1 ending, the show should stick to its anthology format and introduce new characters in season 5.

How Likely Are McConaughey & Harrelson To Return For True Detective Season 5?

Their Return Seems Unlikely, But The Franchise Might Reference Them Again

Since True Detective season 4 did not shy away from referencing Rust and Cohle and even used them as devices to draw viewers in during its initial episodes, it would not be surprising if season 5 treads a similar path. However, when it comes to their return, it seems unlikely that they will be a part of the show’s future seasons. True Detective seems to benefit from its anthology format, which does not allow it to feature the same main characters every season.

In the past, Matthew McConaughey has also been vocal about (via Deadline) how, for him, True Detective was supposed to be “one season, eight episodes, a finite beginning, middle and end.“ The actor confirmed that even if HBO had given him the opportunity to stay for seasons 2 and 3, he would not have reprised his role. In another interview (via The Rich Eisen Show), however, he claimed he would return “in the right context.” Given how True Detective has already grown in a direction far beyond the first installment, it seems unlikely it will have “the right context” to have Rust and Marty back.
