I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s impossible to defeat one’s backlog.
By the time I’ve ticked something off my to-play list, another three new releases have likely spawned in its place.
It’s constantly growing, but I can’t really complain; it simply means that so many delicious games are being released.
This year looks set to bring us so many bangers, from Grand Theft Auto VI to Ghost of Yōtei.
Professor Layton and the New World of Steam currently tops my most-hyped list.
A new addition to that list is Shadow of the Road, an upcoming turn-based RPG from developer Another Angle Games that looks like an incredible blend of Ghost of Tsushima and Baldur’s Gate 3.
“Shadow of the Road is a story-driven, turn-based RPG where feudal Japan meets magic and machine,” the synopsis reads.
“Assemble your team from a diverse set of characters and test your skills against yōkai and steampunk contraptions. Carve your own path through an immersive story and change the fate of the Empire.”
Shadow of the Road is set in 1868, where players will find themselves in a period of civil war between the Shōgun Tokugawa and the army of Emperor Mutsuhito, backed by the British East Nippon Company.
Of course, you’ll be armed with a katana, but that’s far from being the only weapon you can wield in this war.
As I mentioned, this is an age of magic and machinery too.
Players will be tasked, by the Tokugawa’s spymaster, to transport a boy with mysterious powers to a safe location.
You’ll control a group composed of rōnin and characters Satoru and Akira, partaking in Baldur’s Gate 3-esque turn-based skirmishes.
That’s not all. Throughout your journey, you’ll be forced to make a number of important choices, each of which “will guide your characters along unique and captivating paths”.
“Form new bonds, sever lifelong friendships, or mend fractured family ties. Your decisions will shape who [your companions] become,” the description adds.
It all sounds very intriguing. Unfortunately, Shadow of the Road remains without a release date but it is confirmed to be PC only. We’ll be keeping an eye on its progress.
