I started out using mods largely because I wanted to increase the party limit and take more companions out with me to wreak havoc. However, after seeing the massive variety of mod types and options, I started experimenting with all different sorts of class mods, quality-of-life improvement mods, inventory mods, and more. Now, I’m not sure if I can ever go back to the vanilla base game and play without some sort of mod active.
PixellBytes’ Adjustable Party Limit
Have Up To 16 Characters In Your Active Party
If you’re tired of having only four members in your active party, Adjustable Party Limit, by PixellBytes on Nexus Mods, gets rid of the party limit entirely, allowing you to have up to 16 different characters active at once. It works by activating a passive toggle that lets you “upcast or downcast” the party limit up to 16. This mod is a lot of fun, especially with some difficulty-modifying mods active as well. It’s an excellent way to add some diversity to your playthrough, and things can get pretty wild.
Having all the hirelings and companions you can find following you around is a great time, even if things might feel a little crowded. One caveat is that you won’t be able to exceed the four-player limit in multiplayer, but this is an excellent mod if you’re playing solo and want to enjoy as many companions in your party as possible.
Xelphos’s Cheater’s Ring, Or The Cheater’s Spell Scroll
Access Useful Spells & Passives At The Click Of A Button

The Cheater’s Spell Scroll by Xelphos is one of my most-used mods because it lets you do almost anything you want during gameplay. The mod started off as a Ring that gave players a few useful utility spells, but has since ballooned to include a range of cheats and additional spells and/or passives. You’ll be able to toggle passive effects on and off, and you can cast powerful cheats and normal spells and cantrips like you would from a regular scroll, except these don’t disappear after use.
Some examples of what you can do with this mod include free respecs, mass fly (aka grant every party member the ability to fly), instant kill a target, cast enhanced versions of basic spells like Ice Knife and Firebolt, and much more. You’ll also be able to summon gold, edit ability scores, revive any downed teammate immediately, and even unlock waypoints in any act.
Charis’s Unlock Level Curve
Level Your Characters Up To 20

I’m a big fan of being able to level up characters past the level 12 limit, and Unlock Level Curve by Charis lets you do that and then some. This mod supports all 5e spells and multiclassing and includes additional class features at the higher levels, making the late game much more enjoyable. Further, you’ll be able to cast from higher-level spell slots up to Level 9 and will get additional spell slots at various levels.
This mod gives Baldur’s Gate 3 the traditional D&D 5th edition leveling rules, where you can level up to 20 and receive further Ability Score Improvements at Level 16 and 19. The mod also gives you new class abilities for every class once you get past Level 12, such as the Warlock’s Mystic Arcanum and Eldritch Master or the Slipper Mind ability for Rogues at Level 15. Overall, this mod adds a ton of variety to the BG3 experience and is great when combined with enhanced XP mods that let you level up faster.
Caites’s Better Inventory UI
Get Your Inventory Organized

This mod makes grenades and potions much easier to find, as well as alchemy components that are now easily distinguishable from other junk in your inventory. Combined with certain mods that improve your containers and inventory even further, this mod makes for a much cleaner inventory experience that will make your life considerably easier when you’re in the thick of things.
LaundryDragonMaid’s Plasma Weapons – Darkh Set
Play Baldur’s Gate 3 As A Sith Lord

If you’re a Star Wars fan and have dreamed about role-playing as a Sith Lord in Baldur’s Gate 3, the Plasma Weapons mod by LaundryDragonmaidOfficial is the mod for you. This is a really fun mod that combines two of my favorite IPs, and if you haven’t tried out a playthrough as a Sith lord yet, you’re missing out. This mod gives you the one-handed Prismatic Sword weapon, which functions as a traditional lightsaber, as well as the Plasma Staff, which is basically Darth Maul’s dual lightsaber. You can even adjust the colors of the sabers to your liking.
With this mod, you’ll also be able to teleport using the Force and gain the high ground.
Lux-Aurea’s Vampire Origin
A Proper Vampire Class With Unique Skills & Abilities
Similar to the Plasma Weapons mod above, the Vampire Origin mod by Lux-Aurea introduces a unique new experience for anyone who wants to play as a proper vampire. While Astarion is a great character and a lot of fun to play, you’re not necessarily going to get the full vampire experience. This mod provides all the abilities you can think of that actually allow you to roleplay as a vampire, from Vampire Bite to shapeshifting into a bat and more.
You’ll gain access to Vampire Bite, Vampire Claw, Gaseous Form, Bat Form, Darkvision, as well as various immunities and resistances, such as Necrotic resistance, sleep resistance, immunity to Charm spells, resistance to slashing damage, and many more vampire-based effects. It’s the most immersive vampire experience you’re going to get in Baldur’s Gate 3, making it well worth a try.
Rella-mod’s Extra Encounters & Mini-Bosses
Spice Things Up With More Difficult Battles

The Extra Encounters and Mini-bosses mod by Rella-mod on mod.io is one that does exactly what it says, and it will add a ton of variety to your playthrough if you’ve already completed the game multiple times and are looking for a change of pace. I first tried this mod out without reading the specifics so that I could experience these new minibosses and additional encounters naturally as I progressed through, and I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised and caught off guard multiple times.
“You’ll find a ton of variety with this mod in terms of new battles in areas that you’d otherwise just breeze through without interruption.”
This mod adds new battles at various points in each act, such as a werewolf encounter during Act 2 and a new encounter at the Bhaal Temple in Act 3, among many other new encounters. You’ll find a ton of variety with this mod in terms of new battles in areas that you’d otherwise just breeze through without interruption, and it adds a ton of complexity to each act if that’s something you’re interested in.
Rukongai’s Debug Book
Do Anything You Want With The Debug Book

In my opinion, the Debug Book by Rukongai is an absolute must-have for a range of situations. It’s essentially a cheat mode book that lets you do whatever you want, whether that’s traveling to a specific point in the story, jumping forward or backward to a particular act, enabling God Mode to become invincible, or all manner of other options. It’s described as a “cheat engine, but in game,” and will allow you to “manipulate relationships and approval, travel between acts, manage quest flags and progress, set cheats, and a host of other features.”
Fair warning, using this during an active playthrough has the chance to mess up your save file permanently.
Overall, the above mods are just a portion of my most-used, but, in my view, they’re some of the most fun mods if you’re looking to shake things up a bit and try new strategies or approaches to gameplay. There are plenty of mods that complement these as well, such as increased XP mods or others that might make things a bit more challenging, increasing enemy strength and abilities to give you a further challenge. No matter what your playstyle, experimenting with new mods for Baldur’s Gate 3 will give you a whole new perspective on the game.
