Geralt’s slow, heavy combat that defined the franchise?
Gone. Ciri stepping up as the new Witcher? Already confirmed — but the real bombshells devs just leaked in a private podcast are about to split the entire fanbase in half.

CD Projekt Red has stayed mostly quiet about its long-awaited next chapter in The Witcher saga since the cinematic reveal at The Game Awards in December 2024. But in recent weeks, fresh details have surfaced through the studio’s own AnsweRED podcast and technical presentations tied to Unreal Engine Fest, giving fans their clearest look yet at what Project Polaris — officially titled The Witcher 4 — will actually play like.
The biggest headline is no longer a surprise: Ciri, Geralt’s adoptive daughter, is the playable protagonist. What is new, however, is the extent of the gameplay overhaul CDPR is undertaking to make her feel completely different from the stoic monster hunter fans controlled for three main games and multiple expansions.
According to statements from the development team on the AnsweRED podcast, the studio has rebuilt core systems from the ground up. Combat, movement, and world interaction are all changing in ways that directly address long-standing player feedback about stiffness and repetition in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
One of the most talked-about shifts is Ciri’s combat and magic system. Unlike Geralt, who had to plant his feet to cast Signs, Ciri can perform mobile spellcasting while running, dodging or traversing terrain. Developers described this as creating “more flexible battle approaches” that reward aggression and positioning rather than the methodical, stand-and-deliver style of previous entries. The combat itself is being tuned to feel faster and more cinematic, with animations reportedly sped up and new agile maneuvers designed around Ciri’s lore as a Source with superhuman abilities.
Movement has received similar attention. The team confirmed the addition of a dedicated jump button — a feature notably absent throughout the original trilogy. More than 80 new locomotion animations have been created specifically for basic traversal, climbing, and environmental interaction. The goal, according to CDPR, is “super realism” in how Ciri feels weighty yet responsive as she navigates the world. Advanced motion-capture technology is also being used to emphasize Ciri’s emotional range. Facial animations and body language are being designed to reflect her more expressive personality compared with Geralt’s famously stoic demeanor.
Underwater exploration is another confirmed addition. Ciri will be able to swim and fight beneath the surface in fully realized sequences, opening up new quest and monster-hunting possibilities that were limited or absent in earlier games.
The open world is also evolving. While the overall map size is expected to remain comparable to The Witcher 3, the emphasis has shifted toward denser, more interactive environments. Technical demonstrations shown at Unreal Engine events highlighted the northern kingdom of Kovir — a region previously referenced in Andrzej Sapkowski’s books but never fully explored in the games. Dense forests rendered with Unreal Engine 5’s Nanite technology showed seamless foliage detail, while port towns like Valdrest featured crowds of more than 300 NPCs displaying individual routines, varied body types, and contextual reactions.
In one demo sequence, bumping into a merchant caused apples to roll down a hill and scatter a chicken, triggering a small chain reaction. Guards and townspeople offered unique voice lines and animations based on Ciri’s presence, including prejudice toward Witchers. The horse Kelpie, Ciri’s canonical mount, received special attention with improved physics and multi-character motion-matching to eliminate the “jank” many players associated with Roach in previous titles.
CD Projekt Red is building The Witcher 4 on a heavily customized version of Unreal Engine 5 rather than its in-house REDengine. The switch was announced years ago as part of a strategic partnership with Epic Games. The studio has stressed that the tech demo shown so far is not representative of final gameplay but serves as a proof of concept for the artistic and technical direction. Optimizations appear focused on maintaining 60 frames per second even on base PlayStation 5 hardware while delivering high-fidelity visuals.
Story-wise, the game marks the beginning of an entirely new saga. Ciri has undergone the painful Trial of the Grasses, emerging as a full-fledged Witcher with feline eyes and enhanced reflexes. She takes on contracts in remote northern villages, confronting both literal monsters and the “human monstrosity” the series has always explored. Early footage showed her investigating missing cargo attacked by a manticore — a creature cut from The Witcher 3 but now rendered in detail. Developers have confirmed Geralt will appear in some capacity, though the focus remains squarely on Ciri’s journey and choices.
The development team has also hinted at returning systems with improvements. Gwent is confirmed, romance options are expected, and player choices are said to carry more meaningful consequences than ever before. A new Witcher school — the School of the Lynx — is tied to the medallion shown in the announcement artwork, suggesting fresh lore and possibly new allies or rival factions.
On the business side, CDPR’s leadership has been transparent about timelines. The game will not launch in 2026. CFO Piotr Nielubowicz confirmed during investor calls that 2027 is the earliest realistic window, with the studio prioritizing stability after the rocky launch of Cyberpunk 2077. The Witcher 4 is the first entry in a planned trilogy, with parts five and six targeted for release within a six-year window overall. More than 400 developers are currently assigned to the project — roughly ten times the team working on the Cyberpunk sequel at similar stages.
Reaction from the community has been predictably mixed. Long-time fans praise the focus on fluidity and immersion, pointing out that many of the changes directly answer common complaints about animation quality and combat pacing. Others worry that shifting away from Geralt’s deliberate, weighty style could alienate players who loved the original formula. Some online discussions have already begun debating whether Ciri’s more agile kit will make the game “too easy” or whether the emotional mocap will deepen role-playing in ways previous entries could not.
CD Projekt Red has scheduled a larger gameplay showcase for Unreal Engine Fest in June 2026, where fans expect to see extended footage and possibly more concrete details on quest structure, monster variety, and crafting systems. Until then, the studio continues to emphasize that everything shown remains subject to change as development moves deeper into full production.
For a franchise that has sold over 50 million copies worldwide and spawned a hit Netflix series, the stakes are enormous. The Witcher 4 is not just another sequel — it is the launch of a new era. Whether the reported gameplay changes deliver the “next generation of open-world RPGs” that developers have promised remains to be seen. One thing is clear: after years of silence, CDPR is finally giving fans something substantial to talk about.
