Per JoBlo, Wood touched on the topic of a return to his iconic role as Frodo in the upcoming The Lord of the Rings feature film. “It would be pretty incredible,” Wood said of the project. “I have to say, any return to New Zealand to work with those individuals within the context of that world would be… Jumping back into a world that’s so beloved and means so much to me. So yeah, it would be awesome.”
In May, it was announced that luminary filmmaker and original The Lord of the Rings film trilogy director Peter Jackson would be executive producing The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. The film will be directed by Gollum actor and Hollywood icon Andy Serkis, who will star in the feature in a reprisal of the titular role. It was also reported that Jackson’s longtime writing partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens will be “involved every step of the way,” according to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav.
“It would be pretty incredible.”
That Wood is interested in returning to Frodo for the film stands as a relief to many fans considering the actor’s love for the franchise. In 2023, Wood expressed his concerns with what Warner Bros. has planned for the future of The Lord of the Rings, particularly that he hoped the franchise would escape being reduced to a cash cow for the studio. “Obviously at the core of that, is a desire to make a lot of money,” Wood explained. “It’s not that a bunch of executives are like, ‘Let’s make really awesome art.’ And, again, not begrudging anybody because, of course, it is commerce. But great art can come from commerce. So those two things are not mutually exclusive.”
In early June, Wood’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy costar Viggo Mortensen discussed potentially returning to his iconic role as Aragorn for The Hunt for Gollum. Mortensen noted that, “If it was the right way it was being done, or if it made sense, sure.” Mortensen went on to describe his experience on Jackson’s original The Lord of the Rings trilogy as a major influence on any future decisions. “Why not? I learned a lot. I had a great time. It was like a massive, lengthy, complicated, adventurous film school for me and everybody else who was involved… Peter Jackson and his team, it was amazing what they accomplished.”
Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is currently expected to arrive in theaters sometime in 2026.
