Could an Assassin’s Creed game work if it was set during the Second World War? It’s a question that has many fans scratching their heads.

On the one hand it’d be great to see the Assassin’s Creed series embrace a slightly more modern setting than we’ve seen so far, but on the other part of the appeal of the series is exploring historic locations and times.

Discussing the topic further, fans pondered the idea on a Reddit thread by Effective-Moose-5632, who said: “To be honest, I want an Assassin’s Creed game that takes place during World War 2. I understand that they would have to change a few elements, like combat and maybe the stealth, and change the clothing.”

Many agreed, with someone citing the side mission in Assassin’s Creed Unity I alluded to earlier, saying “The Saboteur was probably our best example of AC WW2 and actually, I kinda enjoyed it.”

Others pitched the First World War as a setting instead, saying “WW1 would work, wearing sick trenchcoats, sneaking through trenches and killing fools with bayonets etc. Enemies still had either pistols or bolt action rifles.”

Those against the idea entirely cited some of the horrific events of the World Wars as the main reason a game shoudln\t tackle them, especially since Assassin’s Creed games tend to insert a protagonist into said events.

Nevertheless I still think a more modern Assassin’s Creed game could work, and I’d love to see something set in a modern day city, though perhaps traversal would be a bit complicated if you’re having to climb skyscrapers to get around.

For the time being though it seems like the next few games from Ubisoft will stick to more understandable settings, like Feudal Japan in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
