Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Reynolds was asked about Deadpool’s MCU future and whether that future includes his character appearing in the next two Avengers installments, Doomsday and Secret Wars. While Reynolds is optimistic about the prospects of joining the upcoming Avengers films, he insists he never wants Wade Wilson to join the supergroup or become a part of the X-Men. “There are no updates to share just yet. But I trust Kevin and [Marvel exec] Lou D’Esposito with my life. The character trait I love most about Deadpool is that he’s a fanboy. His enthusiasm and longing to be part of a team is really endearing to me. It’s his overarching wish-fulfillment story. But I don’t think he should ever be an Avenger or an X-Man. If he becomes either, we’re at the end,” he said.
Though Reynolds showed he works well alongside X-Men characters in the Deadpool franchise, and he feels he would make a good combo with a fan-favorite Avenger, the award-winning actor feels it would be out of character for Deadpool to become a part of the Avengers or X-Men. Because his character is an “outsider” and yearns to be successful, Reynolds believes a Deadpool affiliation with either group dilutes his appeal.
Deadpool & Wolverine was a much-needed reset for the MCU. The film hinted at the cinematic universe’s mutant era by introducing several X-Men franchise characters and teased potential storylines in the Avengers sequels. His team-up alongside Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine became a record-breaking hit as the highest-grossing R-rated movie and one of the biggest-earning superhero titles ever ($1.338 billion worldwide). Though fans are clamoring for a Deadpool & Wolverine follow-up, Reynolds is in no rush to portray the character again.
Ryan Reynolds Says Deadpool May Never Lead Another Film
Reynolds is largely focusing on non-superhero projects in the meantime. He, Jackman and Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy are reuniting for the upcoming comedy film, Boy Band. Meanwhile, he’s collaborating with Free Guy writer Matt Lieberman to bring back the vintage cartoon hero, Mighty Mouse.
Deadpool & Wolverine is now available to stream via Disney+.
